BOLD, brave and unashamedly unique, Dive has hit the Northern Quarter with all guns blazing. Having turned the concept of American dive bars into a plush destination that’s perfect for getting together, Dive is characterised by mellow lighting, smooth wood and shiny leather booths. A dedicated snug and widescreen TV, coupled with a menu that’s designed to share, also makes it the perfect place for special events and watching live matches with friends.

Whether you’re into sports or not, theirs is one menu you’ll want to dive into. Having traversed the USA, the team have taken inspiration from regions across the country, creating an all-American menu that’s full of flavour. Not only that, Confidential found an attention to detail that took each dish to the next level.

The grill ‘n’ shrimp tacos, for example, came with little pegs to hold the tortilla together and prevent the contents splurging everywhere; an ingenious idea that, in our humble opinion, should be applied to tacos everywhere. The shrimps were big and juicy, complemented by a little mayonnaise and refreshing chunks of mango; the ultimate Pacific Coast cuisine.

When ordering more than one taco trio, flavours can be mixed and matched. Those of us who like it hot decided on a second option of chilli beef. Due to the sauce used, these came in crisper shells to prevent any sogginess; again, another detail that was much appreciated. Although spicy, a mixture of ground beef with chilli and cumin, the heat was offset nicely by the sour cream.

Tacos consumed, we went for some pulled Kentucky pork sliders. As with much of the menu, this section offered fish (Maryland crab), vegetarian (roast beet), white meat (pulled buffalo chicken) and red meat. A trio of cute miniature burgers, sliders are served on a wooden board and are best combined with a side. We chose sweet potato wedges, which had all the pleasure of fries without the grease-induced guilt.

Sliders and Sweet Potato Wedges

From the bites section, we plumped for juicy Texan beef skewers - which were deliciously tender and came with BBQ sauce and corn relish for dipping - and plant pot. A quirky arrangement of fruit and vegetables, even the ‘soil’ is ground olives: what better way to get your five-a-day?

Desserts looked ridiculously tempting but we managed to resist and opted instead for a bowl of nachos to share. The detail this time was in the cheese, with not one but three varieties drizzled on for the ultimate flavour: red Leicester, mozzarella and cheddar. Add in three delectable dips and you have one ridiculously moreish result.

In fact, everything on menu is highly addictive so the ‘tapas’ sharing concept is probably for the best. The only problem? You might well want to hoard everything for yourself...
