If you think restaurant wine lists are all much of a muchness, think again. Sam’s Chop House has 32 different wines available by the glass – the widest selection in the city centre. But it’s not just a numbers game; you’ll also find wines from fourteen different countries which use 62 different grape varietals to offer a selection that takes in an unrivalled range of flavours. There’s always a perfect pairing for every food dish on the menu.

The food at Sam’s Chop House showcases the best of British cooking and the wine list does the same for British wine producers with six of the best British wines on the market. Home-grown wines may have had an iffy reputation in the past but these will lay that historic stereotype firmly to rest.

The British wines you’ll find today on Sam’s wine list have been garlanded with, amongst other awards, a silver sommelier wine award 2016, a commendation in International Wine Challenge 2016 and 95/100 in Decanter.

You’ll find plenty of award-winning wines to choose from, representing countries from all around the world. After all, George Bergier certainly knows his stuff. However, this is an inclusive selection not an exclusive one. Wine can often seem intimidating but Sam’s Chop House have striven to compile a wine list that offers great value by working on a fixed cash margin rather than a fixed percentage. Hopefully this will open up fine wines to the many, not just the few.

And if you’re looking for real value, remember to browse the selection of bin ends. George Bergier may have a nose for beautiful wines but he also has a nose for a bargain, sniffing out end of line stock and unrepeatable deals.

In fact, George Bergier’s nose does such sterling work that it has become the sign of pure quality on the wine list at Sam’s Chop House. Rather than use complex tasting notes, the symbol of George’s nose is used to mark out his personal favourites. It’s a reliable guide to excellence, giving customers confidence to try new wines. Who knows, maybe one of them will change your life?

After all, it was a glass of wine that changed George Bergier’s life. A glass of 1955 vintage Chateau Haut-Brion, to be exact. When Bergier was a young waiter working at the French Embassy in Warsaw he was so impressed by his first glass of wine that it sent him forth on a journey. It was this voyage of discovery, meeting producers, visiting vineyards and sampling some of the world’s finest wines that led George Bergier to where he is today – former leader of the guild of sommeliers, current president of L’Orde Des Coteaux De Champagne and all round legend.

No wonder the wine list at Sam’s Chop House is equally legendary with a man like George Bergier behind it.
