Gemma Downie is enchanted by this antidote of a stage show
For anyone who knows Rob Madge from Tik Tok, they garnered notoriety posting the sweetest, funniest, old home videos of trying to create a Disney Parade in their own home, while bemused grandparents looked on.
They are actually a seasoned West End musical theatre actor but this show is not designed to celebrate their successes or theatre credits (which are numerous) but instead takes us back to where it all began.
This is their origin story. The obsession with all things Disney, the need to be front and centre in their own living room production, the supportive family, the chance to be the Disney Princess.
The performance of songs and anecdotes is delightfully peppered throughout with the viral home videos, which make you melt and howl in equal measure. The show is fabulous high camp but doesn't back away from Rob’s own struggles in life and trying to fit in.
The stage set is simple but so effective, drawing you into Rob’s sitting room to gather around and watch old family VHS tapes. Just being a spectator listening to Rob’s tales felt like a big comforting hug.
This show is the perfect medicine for a world full of toxicity. It showcases a masterclass of parenting and highlights the struggles of growing up into the person you want to be. It also makes you want a dad like Rob’s – everyone should try and be like Rob’s dad and the world would be a better place.
The show is full of pathos and at moments you could hear a pin drop, the audience hanging on their every word and reflecting on shared experiences. There were people leaving the theatre shedding joyous tears.
Rob is set to go to Broadway next season, which is the pinnacle for all performers, and when you see where it all began for Rob, that is Tinkerbell dust magic for you.
The show runs until Sunday, don’t miss out but if you can’t go, look out for Rob’s Tik Tok account where you can see where the magic began.
My Son's A Queer (But What Can You Do?) is on at HOME, Manchester until Sun 25 August 2024.
