SOMETIMES there really is a thing as too much choice: Zouk, with its large variety of authentic Indian and Pakistani dishes, is a case in point. Fortunately, the team have created a Specials Menu, available from noon daily, to help you decide. With two mains and two starters to choose from, all showcasing the finest in South Asian cuisine, it’s the perfect solution for those who find themselves tempted by everything on the main menu. Plus, since Specials change fortnightly, you’ll find fresh new options from visit to visit.

When Confidential went along, starters included Patrani Fish and Star Anise Chicken Kebabs. Whilst doners have somewhat blighted their reputation, ‘kebab’ actually comes from the Persian word for ‘grilling’ and simply refers to chargrilled meat pieces, skewered or otherwise. Zouk’s dish comprises tender chunks of chicken marinated in a fragrant paste of spices, ground cashew nuts and star anise.
Patrani Fish, meanwhile, originates from the seafaring Parsee communities of India. In this light yet satisfying festive favourite, pieces of fish are marinated and steamed in banana leaves to retain moisture. Zouk uses succulent pieces of haddock basted in mint, coriander, coconut and green chillies - served with a wedge of lemon for extra freshness.
Onto the mains, and a choice of Chicken Chettinad and Uppakari Lamb with Mustard Seeds. The former may be described as ‘dry’ but don’t be fooled: this was moist and saucy - although not overly so - with an impressive amount of chicken. No skimping here. Whilst this Tamil Nadu dish is typically served spicy, those with a low spice threshold can request a milder version. Our recommendation? Accompany with a pillowy naan.
Lamb is arguably more of an acquired taste than chicken and was tucked into with slightly more reserve. A couple of mouthfuls in, however, even those who weren’t normally lamb fans found themselves going in for more. Cooked with mustard seeds, onion and turmeric, this South Indian special is best partnered with a portion of fluffy rice. You can see why they call it ‘special’.
It’s not just food that Zouk excels in, having put its stamp on cocktails too. Diners can find all the classics, plus quirky concoctions like Bollywood Bling - a favourite of bar manager Ricardo - and the tangy Indian Party. Fans of the bubbly can also find a Champagne Cocktails section, with stylish signatures such as the rose petal Romance.
Both Martinis and Mojitos, meanwhile, come in a variety of flavours. For a real taste of India, try Chai Martini, infused with cardamoms and cinnamon. Got a sweet tooth? Then you can’t beat a berry-flavoured Mojito. Or a Daquiri. Or even a Bramble... As we said, too much choice. Teetotallers needn’t miss out either, with a wide range of refreshing Mocktails.
Whatever you choose, make sure to take advantage of the stunning all-weather terrace (and perhaps a little shisha while you’re there). If more temptation were needed, Zouk is currently offering 2-for-1 cocktails every Thursday, 5-7pm.
Summertime? Sorted.
