THERE’s little more festive than a deep shade of Burgundy - fitting then that Burgundy wine makes the perfect accompaniment to turkey, according to award-winning pub-restaurant The White Hart (who know a thing or two about the subject).
As for your Christmas dinner as a whole, both red and white go fantastically - whether the smooth buttery texture of a Cote de Beaune Chardonnay (Chassagne Montrachet or Puligny Montrachet), or a Cote de Nuits Pinot Noir (Nuits St George or Gevery Chambertin), whose light tannins will sit happily alongside the finest of festive dinners.
If you’re lucky enough to be dining at The White Hart this Christmas, they have you covered too; with a suggested matching wine for each course.
If you can’t wait ‘til next Christmas, why not try The Dining Room in the New Year?
The menu kicks off with roast pumpkin veloute, which is recommended with a Turckheim Pinot Gris from Alsace, Reserve, 2013: a silky white variety with subtle notes of spice and flora.
Onto the second course and a choice of four dishes. Highlights include slow-cooked belly pork with apple and garlic - recommended with The Cicada, Domaine Chante Cigale 2014, which takes its name from the famed ‘singing cicadas’ of Provence - and poached partridge with shiitake mushrooms and artichoke, recommended with Wirra Wirra 12th Man Chardonnay from Australia’s Adelaide Hills.
Third certainly isn’t the worst, featuring the likes of baked cod with young leeks and chicken sauce. Suggested companion? Meursault, Vallet Frere 2012, a French Burgundy known for its tangy full flavour.
Moving into sweet fourth courses such as glazed caramel tart with praline ice cream, and equally decadent dessert wines like Clos de Nouys Cuvee de Grains Vouvray 2003.
Last but not least, the five-course carte du jour is topped off a selection of British and French cheese; prescribed with a healthy dose of Petre’s Port. This Portuguese delight is known for its hints of mulberry and roasted coffee, making the perfect finale to the perfect menu.
Not managed to reserve a place? Christmas at The White Hart is now full so we suggest booking in plenty of time the next festive season. And, if you can’t wait that long (we don’t blame you), why not try The Dining Room in the New Year?
