Chorlton’s Horse & Jockey Pub Reopens

THE HORSE and Jockey pub on Chorlton Green is to reopen after a £250k refurbishment.

“The Horse & Jockey has always fulfilled a fundamental role in Chorlton; not just as a place to eat and drink, but as a real part of the local community. In having done so, it has taken a little wear and tear so really needed the makeover."

It will relaunch as Chorlton’s new ‘urban country pub’. All we need to know is what one of those is.

The interior of this 400 year old building has been restored, the kitchen extended to accommodate a larger and 'more creative' menu and the bar has been renovated to 'offer an extended Bootleg craft beer range and deluxe deli counter offering a takeaway service'.

So it's to be an Urban Country Pub Deluxe Deli Takeaway. It's got it all. 'Barry, we're going to need a bigger sign.'

The Horse and Jockey has been an institution in Chorlton positively and negatively. In the nineties and early noughties, apparently, it was a mental institution and older readers might recall the permissive attitude to underage drinking.

In 2009 it was cleaned up, refurbished and since then has started to live up to its prominent position on Chorlton Green. The pub houses its own microbrewery, the excellent Bootleg Brewery, and holds a number of community events including open air music concerts, farmers markets and beer festivals.

With the refurbishment of Lloyds up the road by JW Lees, it seems Manchester's traditional breweries are staging a fightback in Chorlton.
