News came that one of the city’s finest chefs, David Gale, was to leave Manchester having been offered control of the luxury five-star Waldorf Hilton Hotel kitchen in London.
The Wythenshawe-born chef, most recently Executive Chef of the Podium restaurant in the Hilton Hotel on Deansgate, has instead turned his attention to The Lawn Club, the latest re-imagined, refurbished and extended venture on Spinningfields Lawns.
Fluid Bars, operators behind the Dock Bar at MediaCityUK and The Lawn Club’s predecessors, InBloom and Hibernate, have secured Gale to put together a ‘selection of British-inspired small plates and sharing platters with a focus on uncomplicated, seasonal, locally sourced food.’

Operators hope that the introduction of smaller plates, including salted cod, roast beef and potted brown shrimp and crab, will lend themselves to a ‘new type of social dining’ for the venue, with customers sharing dishes out on the grass or within the Lawn Club’s newly refurbished ‘clubhouse’, featuring a retractable roof, day beds, open fires and added seating.

The Lawn Club
The Lawn Club will be the first Spinningfields venue to offer membership to patrons, providing members with ‘a number of different benefits, including access to exclusive events, bespoke hospitality and VIP treatment’.
Thom Hetherington, MD of the the Northern Restaurant & Bar exhibition and the Northern Hospitality Awards, became the Lawn Club’s first member last week. Hetherington was so chuffed he invited Chef Gale (middle) and James Wrigley (right) down to Spinningfields Lawns for a crossest crossed arms competition (see top).
