Harley Young enjoys a relaxing winter morning making use of the 5-star luxury hotel’s spa facilities

As winter sets in, days get shorter and nights get longer, we find ourselves swept up in the hustle and bustle of Christmas chaos and it becomes easy to neglect ourselves. Our brains become frazzled, burnt out and in need of a rest, while our skin takes a beating from the blustery weather and harsher, colder conditions. It’s important to find the time, take a moment to re-centre yourself and relax - even if just for the morning.

Luckily, there’s a beautiful spa slap-bang in the middle of the city centre, meaning squeezing in some ‘me time’ couldn’t be any easier.

Below The Edwardian - Manchester’s 5-star luxury hotel on Peter Street - sits their stunning underground spa, inspired by the thermal baths of Budapest. Complete with a state-of-the-art gym, 12-meter aquamarine pool, jacuzzi, saunas, thermal experience showers and plenty of space for lounging, you can relax to your heart’s content.

I’d been booked in for a mid-morning slot on a Thursday - both the gym and spa only had a handful of people in them, meaning there was ample opportunity to use all the facilities at my leisure.

I started my visit with a massage to undo all those shoulder knots I’d been creating from hunching over my desk. Spa therapist Erin welcomed me at the reception desk with a warm smile and handed me a consultation form to fill in before leading me over to the relaxation room ahead of my treatment. After browsing the glossy mags with a brew, I was guided into one of the treatment rooms - a tranquil, dimly lit space that was warm and welcoming. I mentioned to Erin that I’d recently had a cosmetic procedure the day before, meaning I was unable to put pressure on my face, which she was very accommodating of and tailored the massage to ensure I didn’t need to lie face-down, also confirming the pressure was the right firmness for me and making sure I was comfortable throughout.

Rejuvenated, I made my way back into the main spa area to swim a few laps of the pool and take advantage of the saunas and bubbling jacuzzi before flopping onto one of the poolside loungers, trying my best not to doze off from being so relaxed.
