‘TIS the season for hearty cooking that warms the cockles and embraces the soul in a big thick scarf of indulgence. Fortunately, that’s one of Cane & Grain’s specialities, and the new menu is perfect evidence. Staving off winter, you’ll find their classic ribs jostling alongside a sumptuous new roster of bar snacks, pimped up fries and burgers.
Deceptively simple pleasures with winning extra touches
We could wax lyrical about the whole menu - there wasn’t a single thing we didn’t enjoy on our sneak preview - but then we thought it might be more helpful to whittle it down to our top ten favourites. Here goes...
From The Bone
Quite literally the backbone of the menu, this spans huge beef short rib hunks to tender baby back ribs, smoked overnight for tenderness, and juicy St. Louis seasoned with parsley. All are served with tiki salt house fries, coated in secret house rib, then glazed with a sauce of your choice; whether Sticky BBQ, Cane & Grain (which contains Appleton Jamaica rum), Kansas City or Hot as F**k.
Pimped Up Fries
Fancy upgrading your house fries? This section now boasts some exciting new additions. Opt for sweet potato or add some toppings to the mix, with Kansas City; which comes with pulled pork, bacon and American mustard. Feeling cheesy? Jacksonville is a mixture of skin on and sweet potato fries, slathered in cheese sauce, Jack and red cheddar.
Brisket Po’boy
This had tough competition from Cane & Grain burger but just made the cut for being possibly one of the tastiest sarnies we’ve had the pleasure of scoffing. Imported melt-in-the-mouth US brisket is garnished with fresh salad, a layer of pickles, mustard and a smidge of chipotle mayo. Serve on sourdough and finish off with two tater tots (mini hash browns that also come as a bar snack) and you have yourself an extremely palatable po’boy.
Onto the bar snacks, where delicious newcomers abound - all sharing the theme of deceptively simple pleasures with winning extra touches.
Bacon Wrapped Potatoes
Coated in a herby flour mix, these are fried for crispness and drizzled in reduced maple syrup. Vegetarians needn’t miss out on these beauties, as they come without bacon too.
Pulled Pork Slider
Two sesame seed brioche buns, stuffed with pulled pork glazed in honey roast apple. Enough said. You can also find pork in the form of smoked belly, tossed in sticky house BBQ sauce.
Jalapeño Poppers
Smoked for half an hour wrapped in bacon and stuffed with chilli cheese, undercut by a sweet chilli dip, it’s little wonder these are called ‘poppers’. A veritable taste explosion. You’ll also discover jalapeños in the hush puppies, ingeniously served with bacon bourbon jam.
Popcorn Shrimp
A mixture of freshwater and King prawns are sheathed in a complex coating of flavours, from tangy lime to chopped spring onion. Watch the chipotle mayo on the side - it has an almighty kick.
Mac & Cheese
How do you make mac & cheese even more delectable than it already is? With three cheeses instead of one, of course. This pot of sheer unadulterated indulgence is made from parmesan, red Leicester and grated Monterey Jack topped with spring onions and some more melted Leicester for good measure.
Cane Corn Dog
Old English chipolatas in a cornmeal batter; topped with French’s yellow mustard, tomato sauce and crispy shallots - these are too tasty for their own good.
Shoestring Fries
Julienne Maris Piper potatoes in tiki salt, topped with fried egg and a dash of paprika, these pack just as much punch as crunch. As with pretty much all the menu, they’re very moreish. You’ve been warned...
