YOU might think that eating is so easy, even a baby could do it. Yes, but have you seen the mess they make? The Confidential team showed just how tricky it was to get your fork to find your mouth when you’re blindfolded. Difficult? Definitely. An absolute riot? Certainly. We only stopped laughing in order to try out the next delicious dish.

We were ready to put our tastebuds to the test

Vapiano’s blind tasting is a great evening out – enjoyable, fun and very different. Bibbed up, blindfolded and ready to go, we were ready to put our tastebuds to the test.

The blind tasting included three pastas, three pizzas and five desserts. Quite a treat, eh? The servers were very helpful, taking us by the hand to help us find our plate. I tried to focus on where I’d put my drink and fork so I didn’t cause too much carnage. Thankfully, there were no spillages.

This isn’t an event to be taken seriously. It’s a chance to try good Italian food amongst friends whilst having a laugh and a giggle. The aim was to see which flavours we could pick out and see if we could avoid getting our dinner all over our faces.

As the first pasta dish came out, we sat blindfolded and felt strangely nervous as our other senses heightened. After the first bite, people started to guess what they could taste; some were shouting, ‘I can taste cream,’ another ‘Onions!’ When our ideas were exhausted, our blindfolds were removed to reveal that it was gamberetti e spinaci, a pasta dish involving king prawns, basil pesto, cherry tomatoes, onions, spinach and cream. At least we got some right.

Blindfolds back in place, we were full of anticipation for the next dish which turned out to be pasta pesto basilico. The flavour of basil was unmistakeable. Next came salsiccia con fichi which was pasta, spicy Italian sausage, onion, fresh figs and tomato sauce.

Then for the pizzas which were easier to eat blindfolded. We couldn’t see them, but we all agreed that all three were delicious: carne (chicken breast, chorizo, peppers and ricotta), crudo e fiche (prosciutto, figs, honey and mozzarella) and one of Vapiano’s bestsellers, Barbecue Chicken.

We were spoilt for choice with desserts, trying the classic tiramisu, panna cotta and a heavenly blend of white chocolate and cream on a biscuit base, topped with salted caramel and golden honeycomb – to name but three.

The best part of this experience is that you are trying food you wouldn’t necessarily order or even think about tasting. It’s a fun, relaxed atmosphere and it’s the perfect way to introduce yourself to foods, flavours and textures.

Vapiano aren’t offering blind tastings all the time yet but plan to eventually make this a regular event and want people to share their experiences of the night with the fabulous hashtag #cantseemyvaps
