RETRO fashionistas will be fast-wheeling to an event at MOSI (Museum of Science & Industry, Manchester) this weekend as the Museum holds a Retro Bicycle Picnic on 16 June.

Manchester has a rich history of bicycle production and famous cyclists.
The event, which is part of the national Bike Week, will include riders of vintage bicycles and the Museum’s own costume characters in period costumes. Organisers are encouraging everyone to come in retro or vintage wear with their bikes and bring a picnic.
The editor on his bikeRetro-cyclists will picnic on the station platform, where visitors can watch the steam trains on MOSI’s historic Liverpool Road station site – the oldest surviving passenger railway station in the world (opened in 1830). The Museum’s extensive bicycle collection will also be on display in the Air and Space Hall.
Manchester has a rich history of bicycle production and famous cyclists. MOSI’s collection includes a Pemberton Arrow racing bike, which was ridden by Wilf Higgins when he won the gold medal for the 1000 yard sprint in the 1934 British Empire Championships at the Fallowfield cycle track.
Wilf Higgins was a member of the Manchester Athletic Club (later Manchester Wheelers), and represented Britain in 1931, 1932, 1934 and 1935. Bicycles by Manchester builders John Berry, Jack Sibbitt and Frank Herety, who all became well-known brands in the cycling community, are also on display.
The Retro Bicycle Picnic is held on 16 June, from 12 noon-3pm at MOSI, Lower Byrom Street, Castlefield, Manchester M3 4FP.
