Harley Young enjoys some planet-friendly unwinding at the UK’s first Eco Spa in the heart of Yorkshire

Since I decided to pack in drinking at the tail end of 2023, I’ve been looking for other ways to unwind and leave my stresses behind me.

One activity I’ve become particularly fond of is going on a spa break. Whether it be just the afternoon, the whole day, or a full-on luxury overnight stay with all the pampering bells and whistles, taking time out from the hustle and bustle of daily life to reset and look after my mind, body and soul whilst relaxing with friends or family has become one of my self care rituals that I try and keep up with every couple of months.

After a long, arduous week of tinkering with copy ‘til the early hours, then being woken up at various points throughout the night by my incredibly needy cat, I almost jumped for joy when an email kindly inviting me to experience Titanic Spa in Linthwaite landed in my inbox. Without a moment to lose, I removed the matchsticks from my eyes, rang my best friend Rosie and packed a bag.

A short taxi ride from Slaithwaite station down the windy village paths, we arrived at the Titanic Spa; a rather imposing ex wool mill that was built in 1911, the same year as RMS Titanic - made with the same technological optimism of the iconic ship, the name stuck and it became known locally as Titanic Mill.

100 years later, the moody-looking building was transformed into what it is today; the UK’s first Eco Spa, boasting 33 deluxe apartments and its own bistro and bar whilst putting as much emphasis on taking care of its guests as it does taking care of the environment.

From solar photovoltaic roof panels that generate renewable energy to banning single-use plastic on site, to seashell straws and even going as far as to drill their own private borehole 100 metres below the earth’s surface which provides the spa with pure Yorkshire water, this spa hotel has taken special measures to ensure they’re being considerate of the planet.

These positively impactful solutions, including a mission to become carbon neutral over the coming years, are a huge bonus and help guests unwind even further knowing that their visit will have had as little impact as possible on our world.

After checking in with the friendly and welcoming reception team, we changed into our complimentary gown and slippers and enjoyed an iced coffee on the terrace before spending the rest of the morning and afternoon exploring the facilities.

One of Titanic Spa’s most popular spaces is the Heat and Ice Experience, designed to guide your body through a sensory journey as you experience different temperatures in areas including the Herbal Infusion room, Saunarium, Aromatherapy Room, Crystal Steam Bath, Sauna Cabin, Foot Baths, Ice Room, Plunge Pool and Experience Showers.

Afterwards, you can indulge in peaceful bliss in the Relaxation Lounge - a dark and cosy quiet area with loungers and bean bags to close your eyes and drift off on.

If that wasn’t enough, alongside an indoor heated, salt-regulated swimming pool that’s plenty big enough to get your laps in, Titanic Spa also boasts an outdoor hot tub that comfortably fits eight guests at a time. Rosie and I were lucky enough to bag 20 minutes in the hot tub to ourselves, which provided the perfect setting for a good natter.

After all that unwinding we’d worked up a bit of an appetite, so made our way over to the Titanic Spa Bistro for a light lunch - a Caesar salad for Rosie and a ‘Pastrami Heap’ ciabatta for myself. This bright and airy space serves up affordable, healthy snacks and bites to eat throughout the day before turning into a Modern British restaurant at night.

By the time we’d finished our lunch, our apartment was ready to check into for the evening.

Designed to give guests the a home-away-from-home experience whilst still benefitting from all the perks of a serviced apartment, this luxury accommodation offers more than your average hotel room; a spacious and modern lounge, kitchen and dining areas and a three-piece bathroom suite and large bedroom over a mezzanine level. Toiletries, tea and coffee-making facilities and modcons including a Smart TV, hairdryer and dishwasher are also provided.

Our room also came with a balcony that overlooked the rolling Yorkshire hills and provided a nice outdoor space for relaxing on.

Breakfast is covered in the form of a continental hamper in the kitchen, but you can add on cooked items for an extra charge to complete the experience if you so wish. The kitchen is also fully kitted out with plates, glasses, cups, cutlery, cooking utensils and appliances in case you fancy cooking your own meals.

We spent the next few hours catching up on TV and Rosie made a headstart on getting ready for dinner while I made my way back downstairs for a spa treatment I’d been looking forward to all day; the Comfort Zone Montalcino Thermal Mud Wrap.

Using thermal water from Montalcino in Tuscany, this 55-minute intensive body treatment works to detoxify the body using both heat and cryotherapy methods while the laminaria algae promotes lipolytic action designed to sculpt and tone. My spa therapist Julie told me that the treatment was brilliant for improving the appearance of cellulite and keeping it at bay, which was a huge plus.

I received a soothing head massage whilst cocooned in the wrap, until it was time to wash off the mud and observe my silky smooth new skin.

Now soft and supple, I made my way back to the apartment to quickly change, ready for dinner back in the Bistro. This time, we indulged in two courses (main and dessert) along with a cheeky pair of bellini mocktails to wash them down with.

I opted for the mushroom risotto while Rosie picked the pork belly. We both fancied something ultra sweet to conclude the meal with, deciding on the sticky toffee pudding and a honeycomb cheesecake as our desserts. All of which was thoroughly enjoyable and of generous portions.

Thoroughly satisfied, we retired to our flat for the evening and caught up on missed episodes of Celebrity Big Brother until it was time to get some much-needed shut-eye.

We awoke the following morning before our alarms had even thought about going off - the sign of a good, solid night’s sleep - and set the table for our continental breakfast, enjoying one last moment of peacefulness before checking out and hopping on the train, well-rested and ready to tackle the hustle and bustle of life once again.
