BYOB's yer uncle: bring your own booze restaurants in Manchester

Now and again it’s nice to get high off your own supply. Not in a Tony Montana way, that’s categorically: not advised. But taking a bottle or two of your favourite wine or beer into a participating bring your own booze establishment, and enjoying them with a meal, we can all agree that is a great thing. A flex even.

Rocking up to a restaurant and realising it’s BYOB is great and stuff, but arriving with a bit of prior knowledge is better. For instance, knowing that Double Zero is a stone’s throw from Carringtons wine and beer shop has the potential to seriously enhance your evening. 

Whilst some of the spots on this list have specified days to bring your own booze (stated in brackets), most are BYOB daily. All prices are correct as of the time of writing.

Here are, in our view, some of the best BYOB restaurants in Manchester.

Aladdin Restaurant

Authentic and healthy Lebanese and Syrian dishes since ’88. Withington OG Aladdin is a stalwart on both the local dining and BYOB scenes. Choose from hot and cold mezza, lamb and chicken mezza and speciality mains including lamb chops and shaworma. Corkage is £1 per bottle of wine and 25p per beer.

Codi’s Kitchen

Not only is Codi’s Kitchen Prestwich’s first sushi restaurant, it just so happens to be BYOB too. The ultimate double threat. Former Australasia chef and owner Codi Sheldon makes an impressive selection of sushi as well as crispy chilli chicken and filled bao. Corkage is £2 per person.

Colleen’s (Wednesdays only)

Since taking over from The Hungry Duck, Colleen’s has become a welcome addition to the already bountiful Ramsbottom foodie scene. Serving seasonal fare fresh from the market daily in a casual eating environment, don’t be surprised to see halibut with peas and lovage one week or pan-seared cod the next. Wednesdays at Colleen’s is for bringing your own bottle and corkage is now free.

Double Zero

Always packed to the hilt, Double Zero is a Manchester pizza institution with legions of fans and a shiny award to boot. Sat on that charismatic row of shanty town shopfronts on Barlow Moor Road in Chorlton, it’s perfectly placed for a trip to Carringtons for some worldly beers or a solid bottle of wine. Get a pizza with honey on it, you won’t regret it. Corkage is £1.50 per person.

The Fisherman’s Table (Mondays only)

A seafood supper is always a treat but don’t get wrapped up in Friday traditions. Branch out. Eat grilled tiger prawns with pickled red cabbage and a seafood bisque on a Monday in Marple. Eat monkfish curry on a Monday. Eat seafood at The Fisherman’s Table on a Monday between 6 - 9pm and bring your own bottle of wine (strictly wine only) and pay a mere £5 corkage per bottle.

Hawksmoor (Mondays only, sort of)

Little introduction needed here. It’s Hawksmoor. Britain’s best meat, Birmingham’s best panelling (former Sandwell College wood lines the walls) and one of Monday’s best BYOB offers in the city - Monday Wine Club. £5 per bottle whether it’s something posh from Tipples across Deansgate on Lloyd Street or something in a paper bag from Sainsbury’s on the corner of Quay Street. It’s worth noting that if you’ve got the coinage on you, every day is BYO at Hawksmoor. £25 per 750ml Tuesday to Sunday. Better make sure it’s a good’un though.

Jasmine

No need for bells and whistles at Jasmine on Barlow Moor Road in Chorlton. Just fresh, satisfying Lebanese food available to eat in or take away. The sort of place regulars (of which there are many) swear by, choose from a range of hot and cold meze with makmour and chickpeas fateh very much house specials. Fish cooked over charcoal too. Corkage? Zilch. Nada. Zero English pounds.

Old Cross Tapas

Get yourself to Ashton, get yourself an assortment of plates and bring your own booze to the party. Patatas bravas, black pudding scotch eggs, Iberian ribs, baked goat’s cheese and a rotating weekly specials board all have the potential to be washed down with a wine or beer of your own infinite choice. £1 per bottle of wine, 25p per beer. Happy days.

77 Penny Meadow, Old Cross St, Ashton-under-Lyne OL6 6EL

Mi & Pho

Another institution that needs little introduction. Speak to anyone from Northenden and they’ll swear by it. Award-winning casual Vietnamese dining in a friendly setting. Choose from pancakes, noodle pad thai, pho, rolls and rice dishes with corkage a mere £1 per beer, £3 per wine and interestingly, £5 for a bottle of spirit.

Remal Restaurant

Family-run Remal on Bury New Road prides itself on its hospitality so expect a warm welcome the moment you step in. Lebanese dining traditions of generosity and communal eating are kept with impressive portions and hot and cold starters made for sharing. Homemade burgers set Remal apart from similar ventures elsewhere with options including chicken and halloumi and succuk and halloumi. Corkage is free.

Ruyi

Vegetarians deserve corkage too and Ruyi in Chorlton has got them covered. As well as 100% vegetarian and vegan Oriental dishes including steamed dim sum, house curries, meatless Szechuan dishes and hotpots, Ruyi offers BYOB. Nip in for meatless Chinese dishes (like pretend prawns or crispy imitation beef) and bring a bottle of something nice from The Epicurean nearby or Fell around the corner. £1.50 per beer and £6.50 per bottle of wine.

Yara

Everyone loves Yara, whether it’s a cheeky home delivery or eating in. With outposts in Cheadle, Altrincham and Whitefield, the Levantine specialists pride themselves on using the finest fresh ingredients for a healthy selection of meat and vegetable dishes - you can't go wrong with babaghanouj or hummus and a forkful of falafel. Cheesy bourak also gets a big thumbs up from us. £2.50 for a bottle of wine, £1.50 per beer and £5 for spirits.

Zena Restaurant

Last but not least, Zena on Burton Road in Didsbury where corkage is again a big fat zero. Granted, there’s a £25 (per head) minimum spend for groups of six or more at weekends. For the rest of the week however, it’s 100% free corkin’. Pop a bottle and get stuck into a menu making the most of the finest ingredients given that all-important sun-kissed, healthy Levantine treatment. We recommend hummus lamb and Fattoush, a revitalising mixture of salad veg with generous amounts of lemon juice.
