COMFORT, cosiness and taking pleasure in the little things over warming fare with friends and family: it’s little wonder the Danish way of winter life has become this season’s buzzword.

It would be a travesty to miss out on desserts

And there are few places that do ‘hygge’ better than The Oast House, whose twinkling outdoor tipis have become a Spinningfields festive staple. The historic hops house is already an unusually snug venue amongst its contemporary glass surrounds - but venture into the magical tipis in its forecourt and you’ll find a world of unsurpassed winter warmth.

Think mellow light, a roof strung with fairy lights and long wooden tables covered scattered with furry rugs - not to mention indulgent food galore. Perhaps the star of the show is Pacific Pale Ale Cheese Fondue, a pan of unctuous cheesy goodness surrounded by all manner of goodies. A literal cultural melting pot, it comes with: seeded falafel, hand-cut crudités, thick cut crisps, fougasse bread, chorizo sausages, garlic mushrooms, boiled potatoes and tender chicken skewers.

We should probably mention it’s for two but you’d better come with a good appetite nevertheless. Alternatively, try a famous hanging kebab with seasoned chips (let’s just say they’re famous for a reason). We recommend teaming with a mug of mulled wine, spiced cider or even a hot gin and tonic.

Even if you’re not feeling too peckish, there are plenty of options - from barbecue to rotisserie and award-winning pies to lighter bar snacks and nibbles. It would be a travesty, however, to miss out on desserts: rocky road kebab with biscuit sauce, white chocolate and peanut butter mousse with chocolate and ginger crumb, vanilla rice pudding with Amarena cherries and cinder toffee...

Confidential plumped for baked chocolate chip cookie dough with salted caramel sauce and toffee ice cream - ultimately deciding that Ben & Jerry’s cookie dough ice cream now has a rival in the sheer heaven stakes.

In fact, the whole experience is a little otherworldly; particularly after a hot toddy or two. An intimate retreat from the city bustle - yet with its very own hygge buzz - The Oast House has winter all wrapped up.
