MANCHESTER is a city known for its nightlife, but only a handful of its after-dark institutions have stood the test of time. Funkademia may not be as renowned as The Warehouse Project or the late Hacienda, but it has been going strong for a solid 21 years. That makes it the longest running night in Manchester…and that’s definitely something to dance about.
Hands down, Funkademia is my all-time favourite night out in Manchester and I chose to spend my birthday night there last Saturday. The night confirmed my love for the best disco party this side of ’75. Let me tell you why…

Every Saturday, Funkademia's collective of DJs brings the crowds five hours of pure disco, soul, funk, hip-hop and classic house. In my humble opinion, the music here is the best in the city if you love to get down.
Classic tunes from the likes of Chic, Grandmaster Flash, D-train and The Mary Jane Girls kept us dancing ‘all night long’. Songs like ‘Somebody Else’s Guy’, ‘Maybe So, Maybe No’ by Mayer Hawthorne, and some serious old-school hip hop from Jurassic 5 kept all of us singing along. It was pretty impossible to keep our feet still.
The crowd sets it apart too. Funkademia attracts people of all ages from all walks of life – all united by their love of a little disco-boogie. You feel like you are dancing with the entire room and our party of ten felt like a party of 300.
The atmosphere is friendly and we could tell from the outset that every single person in that room was there for one reason and one reason only: to have a great night free of inhibitions.
Mint Lounge is a fantastic venue. It's well spaced out with two separate rooms, one for the DJ and one for the bar. The two rooms mean there’s plenty of room for throwing some serious shapes. The sound system is amazing. There wasn’t too much drone from the base, and the speaker quality complemented the DJ’s impressive mixing.
We loved the drinks, and the bar was never too busy, which is always a plus. Bar staff were charming, and clearly enjoying themselves too. Drinks were well priced, with a double coming in at about £4.50. That’s pretty good for Manchester’s uber-cool Northern Quarter. I stuck to the spiced rum and ginger, which really kept the fires burning.
Tickets are £5 advance or £6 OTD – another reason we loved this night. Our average spend was about £25-£30, which makes it the perfect local night out. Great for students, and great for a night out pre-payday.
It's easy to see why Funkademia has stood the test of time – it’s a Manchester institution which is here to stay.
