And on weekdays in January, there’s 50% off the entire menu

Most people have decided upon their new year’s resolutions for 2018, whether it be to lose a few pounds, get some exercise or try a vegan diet. But the team at Confidential always pledge to check out as many restaurants as we can in the region; from back street curry houses to Michelin contenders. Lucky for us all, the raft of new restaurant openings still hasn’t slowed down and we’re still rich in terms of places to try out.

So what can we expect from 1761, one of Manchester’s newest restaurants which opened during the final weeks of 2017? It describes itself as ‘an independent, British restaurant passionate about fresh, seasonal and locally sourced British food’, with Manchester very much at its heart.

You’ll find the brand new two-floor restaurant and bar on the corner of Booth Street on the former Avalanche site. It still has huge windows spanning the whole corner, which makes it a perfect spot for people watching. Inside you’ll find a balance between comfort and glamour in the form of comfy leather sofas and handmade full length drapes along with sparkling chandeliers.

The venue’s name was inspired by the birth of the Industrial Revolution in Manchester, as 1761 was the year the Bridgewater canal opened and revolutionised the way goods and people were transported around the country. See if you can spot the small details which celebrate our local heritage and warm Mancunian spirit, like the handmade front door handle in the shape of Manchester’s iconic worker bee symbol.

1761’s menu celebrates the best of British too, with many ingredients sourced from local growers, producers and suppliers. In fact, EVERY penny spent at 1761 stays in Manchester and supports the local economy. Brunch, lunch, dinner and drinks are all served with the aim of giving a fantastically British experience; a modern take on classic dishes with a touch of luxurious old style glamour. Choose a quick bite from the lunch menu (12-5pm every day) which includes a range of snacks, salads, open sandwiches or their speciality….fresh oysters. Or you can indulge and take your time over a few dishes from the full menu with heart-warming pies, good old traditional fish and chips, proper corned beef hash, chargrilled rib eye steaks and even a hugely comforting bubble and squeak risotto.

Each dish has been infused with the spirit of the city; even the batter for the fish and chips contains a touch of Manchester’s Three Rivers Gin and almost all vegetables come from Manchester Veg People – a co-operative of local organic growers.

If you just fancy popping in for a drink, remember to order a few bar snacks, which have all been created with typical as much attention to detail. Pickled popcorn cockles and IPA pickled onions were popular from the off, as are their fantastically crispy pork scratchings which come with baked apple puree.

Desserts are another must – after all, puddings are practically part of the British makeup. This is the place to head for if you are a fan of the luxuriously indulgent sticky toffee pudding, a good example of a classic Manchester tart or something old school like mulled quince with orange cream.
