On International Women's Day, L’Oréal Blackett ponders the trend of wearing your heart on a tee
TODAY is International Women’s Day – what better time to wear a t-shirt committing oneself to the girl power cause? It’s a small contribution to the global conversation of female empowerment, yet fashion rarely gets to be considered as serious - never mind feminist - in the public sphere. It's a refreshing change.
...making a statement with clothing is largely what fashion has always been about.
Still, in spite of some cynicism, fashion has been exercising its feminist voice on t-shirts and the catwalks of late, from nods to author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s We Should All Be Feminist essay to ‘This Pussy Grabs Back’ hoodies and, lest we forget, Ed Milliband in a ‘ this is what a feminist looks like’ grey marl shirt back in 2014 – maybe the trend for protest in fashion started with Ed?
Despite accusations of bandwagoning, the trend for making a statement with clothing is largely what fashion has always been about. This time the message is clear.
From 'pro-choice' t-shirts to breast cancer awareness, here’s a list of empowering t-shirts making a much-needed statement.
