DEVELOPER McCauls has been given the go ahead to develop the old ‘German Warehouse’ on George Leigh Street in Ancoats.
Projects like this show that key buildings that create the character and history of an area can be creatively reused alongside new development
The scheme, titled Warehaus Ancoats (main image), will see two four-storey blocks and one six-storey block comprising 25 apartments and seven townhouses constructed around a central courtyard enclosed by George Leigh Street, Silk Street and Radium Street.
The developer hopes the project ‘presents a number of opportunities to revitalise the outer edge of Ancoats and encourage future regeneration initiatives’.
Joe McCaul, Director at McCauls, said: “McCauls is delighted to continue to play our part in the regeneration of Ancoats and New Islington.
“Following an architectural competition, we have worked closely with OMI to develop the design. Warehaus Ancoats will provide an exciting mix of properties with new build apartments, townhouses and stunning loft style apartments in the refurbished old mill.
“As a company, our focus is firmly on the open market and we believe there is a big requirement for quality homes that people want to buy and live in. We have found that with the huge rise in PRS schemes the owner occupier market is being neglected, and this is where we see our niche.
Adam Gray, Senior Associate at OMI Architects, designers of the scheme, said: “OMI has a strong track record of designing residential developments in sensitive contexts, and bringing disused buildings back to life.
“Projects like this show that key buildings that create the character and history of an area can be creatively reused alongside new development. That’s what excites us, it’s fantastic to be involved with the continuing revitalisation of this historically significant area of Manchester.”
Warehaus Ancoats is expected to start on site in September 2016.
