Walking up the steps of Efes Restaurant, I wasn’t too sure what sort of night I was in for. I hadn't heard a bad word said about the place, with people raving, "Oh you'll have a great night". Well, they weren't wrong. I've not had that much fun since the school disco in 1996 when my Mum let me wear fluorescent laces in my Reeboks. I also stayed out, and more importantly, awake. Anyone who knows me well understands that this is a special achievement.

There's a reason for its success and why many choose it as their destination for a great night. Pure unadulterated fun

Efes is practically a dinosaur in relation to the ever-changing Manchester food scene. Open since 1992 and situated on Princess Street, a stroll away from Canal Street, the restaurant still manages to fill every single seat in the house. There's a reason for its success and why many choose it as their destination for a great night. Pure unadulterated fun.

Efes' staff know how to crowd please, and they do it well. It’s a traditional Turkish tavern, serving a mixture of buffet food throughout the week and set menus at the weekend to cater for the vast number of party groups, couples and families that come through their doors. Age is irrelevant, mischief is a must.

The food is simple yet tasty and reflects the traditional cuisine of Turkey. Meze, humus, and various other starters are on offer, followed by a selection of meat dishes such as lamb, slow cooked beef, chicken stuffed with feta and sun dried tomato, and vegetable moussaka. Profiteroles and baklava go down well, too, after a few beers and a boogie!

The booze is as you'd expect, with the addition of a few traditional Turkish beverages to choose from. Entertainment runs into the early hours. Guitarists, live singers, a DJ, belly dancing and dancing waiters ensure everyone's tastes are catered for. Audience participation is encouraged but you can also just sit back, relax and take in the atmosphere. I did the former, obviously. After a few drinks everyone thinks they're better on the bongo drums then the drummer himself.

Efes is a fantastic choice for a night out, whether you’re celebrating an occasion or just want a meal out that offers something a little different. Either way, you’ll be guaranteed a great evening. But ensure you book early, as Efes fills up pretty quickly, especially at weekends. I'll certainly be searching for an excuse to return.
