SEQUINS and lots of them - we all know the style drill each Christmas. Add a bit of gold lamé, lace trim and a pair of corn-causing strappy heels and you have yourself a blinding festive outfit. Call it festive spirit or too much sherry, but we're always a little too keen to rival our Christmas tree in the bells and whistles department (complete with tinsel scarf and bauble earrings).

From Zara to New Look, stores have rekindled a passionate love affair with velvet this season. Once used to outfit pimpmobiles and, err… seventies shag pads, velvet has infiltrated its way back into stores and is now a certified trend item. Find hundreds of dresses, blazers, shoes, chokers, bags and more in the comeback fabric.
Not one for velvet? Well, true to long-standing tradition, the high street has overdone it with metallics this year - as it does every year. Whether silver, gold, rose gold or tinfoil, you’ll find a skimpy party dress covered in it. Silk/satin slip dresses have also made a mighty return from the style archives. For reference, think of nineties exposed-nipped Kate Moss, Cher Horowitz a la Clueless and Carrie Bradshaw’s infamous ‘naked dress’ covered with phallic graffiti on the side of a New York bus. Very fash. Yet, outside of 1999, it’s a risky trend (especially if you’re going bra-less), and there's every possibility you may look like you’ve popped out in your sexy nightie. Still, rest assured Vogue has said it’s cool.
