CLOCKWORK DREAMS - TING-TONG CHANG | Centre for Chinese Contemporary Art | 17 Jul - 16 Aug
Previous artist-in-residence of the CFCCA, Ting-Tong Chan, showcases his exhibition on automata used to show perceptions of Utopia. He has presented this theme by using talking automatons to tell visitors about these ideas, and drawings which show the progression of a journey through a mythical world.

Inspired by Exposed Painting Green Lake by contemporary artist Callum Innes, the Absent Presence display focuses on art as a method of capturing a moment time, and its ability to make an object present and absent at the same time within an art form.
ExtraORDINARY | The Lowry | 25 Jul - 18 October
This exhibition focuses on ‘Everyday objects and actions in contemporary art’. It applies the concepts of contemporary art to the human body and its natural ability to generate creative expression, as well as the usual everyday objects. This makes it an original and interactive showcase suitable for all ages.
MICRO MICRO REVOLUTION | Centre for Chinese Contemporary Art | 3 Jul - 6 Sept
The Micro Micro Revolution exhibition concerns environmental concerns in Taiwan. Supported by Spotlight Taiwan and the University of Salford, it will consist of three main art projects: A Cultural Action at the Plum Tree Creek, Plant-Matter Needed and 500 Lemon Trees, which aim to demonstrate art as environment, social movement, and platform respectively.
ARTISTS IN THE FRAME | Manchester Art Gallery | 21 May - 31 Aug
Manchester Art Gallery’s newest exhibition is a collection of self-portraits entitled Artists in the Frame, a collection of work that sees the artist fall prey to that same desire to present themselves to the world, even create themselves through the act of creating art. The show centres around Anthony van Dyck’s final self-portrait, a work of inestimable international importance and one of just three self-portraits he is known to have painted in Britain - read our review here.
LS LOWRY – The Art and the Artist | The Lowry | 13 Jun - 31 Dec
The home of LS Lowry reopens their exhibition of the largest public collection of Lowry art, including new works that have not been displayed in public for many years and a reflection of the artist’s life in Salford. Free talks will be held every day at noon and 2pm.
THE M+ SIGG COLLECTION | The Whitworth | 1 Jul - 20 Sep
The M+ Sigg Collection was compiled by the Swiss collector Uli Sigg (who was also ambassador to China) and is acknowledged to be the largest and most comprehensive collection of contemporary Chinese art in the world. The collection itself is huge and will be presented to the new M+ museum for visual culture due to open in Hong Kong in 2019 - read our review here.
PROTECT | People’s History Museum | 4 Aug - 17 Sept
‘Protect’ will be an exhibition in the Community Galleries part of the People’s History Museum. Set up by Al Johnson, it has been produced to honour the Miner’s Strike of 1984-1985. The project is made up of red models of police riot shields, emblazoned with slogans representative of the determination and struggles of the miners, their families and their supporters.
DARKNESS & LIGHT - EXPLORING THE GOTHIC | John Ryland's | 16 Jul - 20 Dec
This exhibition explores how the Gothic literary genre was inspired by Gothic architecture, and how this genre has modern influenced art, film and subcultures. The showcase covers a variety of subjects within this area, as well as displaying artwork by students from the University of Salford, and an exploration into perception of the word Gothic in today’s society through a collection of photographs of ‘Goths’.
BY THE WAY... The Portico Library are running an 'Adopt a Book' scheme from 4 to 31 August which aims to support the conservation and preservation of old and deteriorating books within the library.
The scheme asks for a donation towards the library, and in return a bookplate with the donator’s name, date and a dedication they have written will be permanently placed in a book of their choice.
