The museum is inviting visitors to celebrate Pride through learning about LGBTQIA+ scientists that changed the world
Science and Industry Museum is inviting visitors to add a trip to the museum to their Pride itinerary this bank holiday weekend, with new talks exploring the life and legacy of Manchester computing pioneer Alan Turing, creative activities inspired by Pride, and a special event celebrating LGBTQIA+ STEM professionals.
Friendly Spotlight Volunteers will be hosting new talks exploring the life and legacy of mathematician Alan Turing. Widely recognised as one of the founding fathers of computer science and an LGBTQ+ icon, Turing’s wartime codebreaking contributions helped save millions of lives, while his pioneering work with early computers in Manchester helped shape the future of modern computing.
Visitors can also see a new rainbow portrait of Turing by local artist Baiba Auria, alongside the £50 note featuring his portrait, which was unveiled at the Science and Industry Museum by the Bank of England in 2019.
There’s plenty of interactive opportunities too, with visitors being able to design their own woven paper pattern inspired by the Pride flag and colourful banners of protest.
Plus, on Saturday 29 August, University of Manchester will be on hand celebrating LGBTQIA+ STEM professionals with a programme of fun, hands-on activities. Visitors can explore the fascinating world of quantum science, try to crack a secret code, build a spinning thaumatrope and test their knowledge by guessing famous scientists and inventors.
All the activities are free and make up the museum’s Pride Programme, with full details, dates and times available on the museum’s website.
