New Release Cinema – Dark Knight Rises
There’s only one way to watch one of the most highly anticipated films of the year and that’s at the Printworks Odeon, home of the only 70mm IMAX screen in the North West. Dark Knight Rises was designed specifically for IMAX you see. Unlike some blockbusters over 70 minutes of the movie was filmed using IMAX cameras so the footage will fill the entire 26.3m x 18.7m screen (with no black around the sides). Sankeys nightclub plays host this Friday to DJs John Dahlback, Juan Kidd, and The Dutch Rudder. Doors open at 10.30pm, and the party will go on through the night; ending at 5.30am. Advance tickets cost £12 and can be bought here.
Theatre – 24:7 Theatre Festival
The annual 24:7 Theatre Festival returns this Friday, with events running until 27 July. Now in its ninth year, the Festival is designed to showcase new acting talent and theatre productions. All productions will be staged at the Three Minutes Theatre located on the ground floor of Afflecks Palace, or New Century House on Corporation Street. Furthermore, there are several other events on offer including Q&A sessions and workshops. Nightclub – Purple Heart at Black Dog Ballroom
For one night only this Saturday, sixteen of Manchester’s most popular techno DJs are coming together and showcasing their talent at the Black Dog Ballroom. The special event has been organised to raise funds for 27-year-old brain tumour patient Lyndsey Roughton and her Purple Heart Brain Tumour Fund. During the day there will be a BBQ, raffle and drinks available. The club night starts at 8pm, ending at 4am. Tickets are £5 per person with the option of a donation. New restaurant Solita (AKA South of Little Italy) is opening in the Northern Quarter this Friday. Combining a variety of tastes from New York, Italy and Manchester, there are a number of different options on Solita’s menu, making it one to consider this weekend. There are a wide variety of grilled specialities to choose from, including an appetising salmon steak. You can take a look at the official website here, which includes a link to the menu. Community – Dig the City
Dig the City, the UK's first urban garden festival, runs from 24 – 29 July in Exchange Square and Cathedral Gardens. The aim is to 'make our city grow' - to bring people to Manchester to both celebrate horticulture and gardening, and to champion the hard work that takes place already in many of the City’s communities. This weekend, Dig the City needs your help. From now until 23 July, the Dig the City team will be assembling the gardens. This will involve digging, planting and creating the vision for the festival. Volunteers for these roles are needed for any time of three hours or more; or whatever you can commit from 10am - 4pm. Please note this work will get dirty, you will need to wear appropriate clothing and footwear. Kids – Lego Friends 2012 Roadshow
On Friday 20 July – Monday 23 July, the Lego Friends 2012 Roadshow will be at the Legoland Discovery Centre in The Trafford Centre. Visitors will be introduced to the world of Lego Friends and the five central characters; Emma, Olivia, Andrea, Stephanie and Mia who have travelled all the way from their hometown of ‘Heartlake City’. Each friend has her own hobbies and interests including animals, performing arts, invention and design.There will be a host of exciting activities at the roadshow from building and playing with the range of sets to designing an outfit for the stylist Emma in the Lego Friends Roadshow competition. Entertainment – Ghost Tour
Discover the dark and mysterious side of Manchester this weekend courtesy of Jonathan Schofield and his Haunted Underworld Tour. If you think you’re brave enough, tours start in St Ann’s Square every Thursday and Friday at 5.30pm, and every Saturday and Sunday at 3pm. Furthermore, you can explore the hidden depths of Manchester beneath the Great Northern Goods Warehouse this Sunday at 5.30pm and 7pm on the Great Northern Tunnel Tour. Retro Cinema – Jaws
The Cornerhouse is screening a wide variety of cinematic favourites as part of its Matinee Classics programme, and this Sunday you can enjoy Steven Spielberg’s 1975 timeless classic Jaws. Regarded as one Spielberg’s, and the big screen’s finest, this is a great chance to witness the orginal film on the big screen. The Sunday showing is at noon, and there is also an extra showing next Wednesday at 1.30pm. Standard tickets for both screenings cost £5.50 and can be bought online here. Entertainment – The Big Knitted Art Project
A new craze is sweeping Manchester. Known affectionately as ‘yarn bombing’, residents of the city come together to create public works of art using their knitting skills. The finished creations will be displayed in various parks across Manchester. The knitting groups will be led by local artists Caroline Coates and Jen Gilmour, and they will be running several workshops throughout next week. The art projects will be displayed in Hulme, Longsight, and Moss Side. For more information, please click here.
