HEAD chef at The French, Adam Reid, will represent the North West in this year’s BBC Great British Menu.

Reid will be joined by fellow regional representatives, Liverpool-born Matt Worswick, who this year replaced Michael Wignall at The Latymer in Surrey, and Cheshire-born Kim Woodward of the Gordon Ramsay-owned Savoy Grill in central London, making Reid the only locally-based chef in the competition.

The annual cook-off will this year see 24 chefs – three from eight regions – competing to cook at a banquet held in the Palace of Westminster in honour of the achievements of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II’s ‘Great Britons’.

Many of those attending the banquet will have been awarded honours by the Queen, from OBEs, CBEs and MBEs to the Victoria Cross.

During the regional heats, the chefs’ dishes will be judged by eight Great British Menu veterans including Reid’s mentor Simon Rogan, Tom Aitkens and Michael O’Hare – who recently unveiled plans to open three new restaurants in Manchester.

The two chefs who are scored most highly by the judges will then present their four-course menu to a panel of judges featuring award-winning restaurant critic and Guardian food and drink editor, Matthew Fort, veteran author and cookery writer Prue Leith, acclaimed restaurateur Oliver Peyton, and a special guest judge.

The victors of the regional heats will then battle it out in the national finals for a chance to cook at the ‘Great Britons Banquet’ at the Houses of Parliament.

“In the competition this year, we see some of the finest food we have ever seen. It is modern, original and delicious. The future of British food is secure; the future of British food is exciting," said Fort.

Reid, who started his career at the Bridgewater Hall, quickly moved through the ranks of Brockencote Hall in Worcestershire and the Michelin-starred Chester Grosvenor before landing the Head Chef role at The French in 2013.
