Stockport to open its first Beer Hall and sound system venue: ‘Underbank’

The team behind it are planning a big launch weekend and full vision for the new SK1 destination

Stockport will welcome a new day and night destination just in time for summer. The new permanent opening, Underbank, combines elements of all the pop-up events we’ve come to know and love the vibrant town for - Foodie Fridays, car park raves and street parties - with the team behind the venue teasing: “This summer we open the ground floor, but if all goes well, we have plans for every floor.”

Taking over the former HQ of a Cheshire bank and a furniture store, Underbank will be the only Stockport venue which has entrances both over and under banks, meaning its roof terraces will connect to the popular old town market plaza with the ground floor linking The Underbank; home to independents Stanley, Bruk, Cantaloupe and Yellow Hammer.

Family run by local husband and wife team Des and Nina O’Malley (the couple behind Nook in Heaton Moor), they’re hoping it becomes the missing link in the emerging food and drink scene. The pair say: “Stockport is changing, you can feel it, the quality of food and drink is getting better and better and we want to be a part of it.”

The Bar Hall part of the venue will boast a carefully curated selection of beverages from local breweries including Runaway and Pomona, as well as ‘proper pints’ of Guinness and frozen margs for those summer vibes, while the sound system refers to the commitment to supporting DJs and party collectives.

The launch festival weekend will see everyone from Rich Reason to James Holroyd, Mix-Stress to Sticky Heat taking over the system and doing what they do best.

As well as a stellar lineup of drinks and entertainment, there’ll be guest kitchen takeovers each season from local foodie legends including Pachos and Steve Patel’s who will be leading the launch.

The team say: “We’re working around the clock to get open. We will open in phases, and will be opening up more floors as we grow. In the basement we have a recording studio and events space. We have plans for Stockport's first roof terrace next year, if all goes to plan.”

Underbank officially opens on Friday 30 May and will be open Thursdays to Sundays every week (12:00-01:00) thereafter.
