THE next craze from danceland?

The result is a competitive DJ-off, and a very unusual night out”.

John Ryan, broadcast professional and regular spinner of music, is giving out headphones this Friday for a silent disco in the city.

As he says, “If you think this is really silent you're in for a shock. The bizarre thing is how much people sing along to the music they choose. Each set of headphones we dish out can be switched to one of three channels, so there's no guarantee the people around you are dancing or singing to the same thing you are. The result is a competitive DJ-off, and a very unusual night out”.

“What we’ve tried to do at Retrosexual,” Ryan continues, “is make the channels decade-specific and full of classic hit songs to sing along with. So, if you're bored of the disco 70s, just flick your headphone switch and you'll hear a new wave classic from the 80s - or maybe some 90s Britpop. Our headsets also have an LED on the front so you'll know if your mates are on the same channel as you.”

As for the location. Ryan’s gone for a space he appreciates and so does Confidential.

“We went to Homoelectric,” he says, “in Gallery 2022, in the Northern Quarter and loved the space - a tiled basement venue. It’s got silent disco written all over it we reckon.”

Retrosexual, Manchester's Silent Disco kicks off this Friday 23 November from 8pm. 2022 is 20/22 Dale Street, Northern Quarter, Manchester M1 1EZ. £7.
