SHOOTING fog rings out of giant vortex cannons, riding a hoverboard and making gooey slime are just some of the highlights for young visitors.
The Mad Science zone will be open all four days of the festival
Le Mans Crescent will be transformed into a dedicated fun science laboratory for this year’s festival, which takes place over the Bank Holiday weekend, from August 26 to 29.
Award-winning Mad Science North West will be offering the unique and hands-on science workshops.
There will be seven interactive areas: a vortex cannon zone; a slime zone; a kitchen chemistry zone; a sensory zone; a mad lab photo booth, and a fantastic show zone – with mad scientists and lots to entertain children along their journey.
The activities are suitable for children aged two to 14. The Mad Science zone will be open all four days of the festival, from 10am to 5pm. For entry to the zone, a Mad Science passport, priced at £2.50, is required.
Lancashire-based Mad Science North West was recently named Worldwide Franchise of the Year at the Mad Science International Conference in Montreal, beating 165 other Mad Science franchises across 25 countries.
Dr Caroline Chesworth, Chief Mad Scientist and MD of Mad Science North West, said: 'We are thrilled to be part of Bolton Food and Drink Festival and will be bringing our biggest ever Mad Science extravaganza to Le Mans Crescent.
“A team of 12 Mad Scientists will entertain and engage kids every day, stamping their souvenir Mad Science passports as they complete activities at each of our seven zones. Our shows are a real crowd pleaser too, and fun for all the family.”
The festival is organised by Bolton Council in association with Aldi. Leader of Bolton Council, Cllr Cliff Morris, said bringing the science zone to the festival this year tied in well with Manchester’s year as European City of Science.
He added: “This year we wanted to do something a bit different which fits in with the science theme.
“Bringing in the dedicated science zone will offer an interactive fun family experience and is guaranteed to captivate children of all ages.
“Together with the mad science zone, we’ve got the perfect formula for a family friendly festival – a mixture of great food and drink, fantastic chefs and entertainment for all of the family.”
Passports are available from the Octagon Theatre, via www.boltonfoodanddrinkfestival.com or 01204 520661. Box office is open 9am to 7pm, Monday to Saturday. Passports can also be bought on the day but to guarantee admission, book in advance.
The University of Bolton will also be joining the fun all weekend with some interactive stalls on Le Mans Crescent. From robotics to high powered sports cars there will be lots of free activities to ensure curious minds are entertained.
