THE Hoxton Street Monster Supplies, 'Purveyors of Quality Goods for Monsters of Every Kind' has landed at Harvey Nichols Manchester.
If this all sounds a bit luvvy and bit ‘nice’ from those jolly people in the creative industries then you’d probably be right. But that said the range is surprisingly good fun and should provoke some conversations around the family breakfast table.
Supporting the Ministry of Stories, a non-profit creative writing and mentoring organisation, the Hoxton Street Monster Supplies has brought out a selection of spooky and downright bizarre treats to entice the senses and imagination. Writers such as Nick Hornby and David Nicholls, amongst others, have composed ingenious tales behind each product.
So you get large doses of Night Terrors (Edwardian fruit rock, £8) which will reputedly ‘induce visions of French teachers and orthodontists’ and is prepared by Eoin Colfer. Other tins of fear include The Chills by Jeremy Strong, The Night Sweats by Andy Stanton, Creeping Dread by Charlie Higson, and Alarm by Meg Rosoff.
The Ministry of Stories, founded in the UK by Nick Hornby, Lucy Macnab, and Ben Payne, is 'dedicated to the creation of stories by a new storytelling generation. It inspires young people, aged 8-18, with the belief that creative writing unleashes the imagination and builds confidence, self-respect, and communication'.
Colin Firth, a supporter of the Ministry of Stories, says: “When you buy one of their tins of fear, or jars of brain jam, you don’t just get something to liven up your breakfast table. You know that you’re helping to support the business of the imagination with the next generation.”
