THERE’S more to American cuisine than burgers and fries. That’s the premise of the Northern Quarter’s latest addition Alabama’s, which opened last week with a lively launch party.

Owner Brad Parkins, of the nearby The Whiskey Jar, says he hopes to transform views of American dining by offering lesser-known dishes such as New Orleans’ etouffee - shellfish over rice, flavoured with Creole or Cajun seasonings - and Monte Cristo sandwiches with fruit compote and waffles.
Naturally, there’ll also be the usual staples of steak, mac ‘n’ cheese and pancakes whilst an onsite bakery will offer specialists breads, traditional bagels and benedict muffins with eggs Florentine. Punters can also expect milkshakes, bottled American beers and bespoke brunch cocktails, including a breakfast Martini with marmalade and a spicy Bloody Mary.
Located in a former pizza shop, beneath the fantastically named Master Chu’s Lion Dancing Club, Alabama’s interior plays on Parkins’ love of movies. The Grade II listed space has been converted into an airy dining area with open kitchen and bar, along with more unusual elements like red Scalamandre zebra paper used in Wes Anderson’s 2001 film The Royal Tenenbaums and 6,000 one cent coins set in resin on the bathroom floor. Donut lights have been imported from Oregon, whilst the vibrant seating was sourced from all over the US. Judging from the likes of French toast with bacon and maple syrup, you’ll need a sit down...
