WORK on Hough End Leisure Centre is reaching its final stages. The facility boasts state-of-the-art facilities including a 25m, six lane swimming pool and a 17m learner pool. Located next to Hough End playing fields on Princess Road, South Manchester, the doors are set to open to the community on 15 June.

Features include a health and fitness gym with 90 stations, two squash courts as well as a sauna and steam room and a multi-purpose space - which will be used as both a dancer studio and community space.

Hough End Leisure Centre is part of a major programme of investment in leisure facilities being undertaken by Manchester City Council as part of a scheme to create three new leisure centres. Hough End is the second of these centres, joining the East Manchester Leisure Centre which opened late last year and the new Arcadia Centre in Levenshulme - where work is well underway.

Councillor Rosa Battle, Manchester City Council executive member for culture and leisure said: ”The city council has a commitment to providing top quality leisure facilities so residents have everything they need to live healthier and happier lives. Leisure centres are at the heart of local communities and our investment in Hough End, along with other new facilities in the city, ensures local residents have access to modern equipment and high-quality pools in their own neighbourhoods.”

The centre is set to replace current swiming pools in the surrounding area that are in need of renovations. Friends of Withington baths launched a successful 'Save Our Bath's' appeal that gained support and attention and meant Withington still has their own pool. Inspired by their appeal Chorlton Civic Society have applied to have the Chorlton facilities registered as an asset of community value. They believe that the new centre is too far away from Chorlton precinct. Chorlton baths will close once the Hough End facility opens.
