All you need to know about Manchester's fashion and beauty scene this month...
NEW DEANSGATE HAIR SALON
(01/10) Sure, Deansgate isn't lacking in hairdressers - blowdries are just as accessible here as a standard Costa latte. Yet new-to-the-fold Rush hairdressing group is said to be turning heads in Manchester with the opening of its new flagship salon. Rush Hair opened doors to its brand new venue (next door to cafe Nero) on Saturday 1 October. The salon is said to be a showpiece for the group, with a modern interior, luxe retail range and a fourteen-strong team of some of the 'best stylists in the country'. Stell Andrew, co-founder of Rush Hair, said of the opening: “This salon will be our flagship venue and it’s going to look stunning. We really want to make it the perfect place for customers to give their hair some TLC and feel really pampered in a luxurious setting.”
SELFRIDGES' NEW CONTEMPORARY STUDIO
(02/10) Head up to the third floor of Selfridges Exchange Square and find a major injection of Parisian chic and edgy contemporary street-style. The department store has completed stage three of their ongoing redevelopments (which include the North West’s largest shoe department and a Louboutin boutique) and have boosted their womenswear floor with a new contemporary makeover. This floor has turned its focus to mid-to-high range labels, including preppy Parisian brands such as Claudie, Maje and Sandro as well as retaining the likes of high-street favourites Topshop, Missguided, Whistles and Ted Baker. Exclusive new Chinese label Mo&Co has been introduced to lure in the big-spending Chinese students. In fact, the new floor has been specifically designed with international customers in mind and there’s even a tax refund lounge.
OLIVER BONAS FOR MANCHESTER PICCADILLY STATION
(05/10) Piccadilly Train Station - not our usual fashion haunt (the Accessorize is pretty nifty, though). Regardless, the train station will soon welcome international clothing and homeware store Oliver Bonas on Saturday 15 October, becoming the brand’s 58th store in the UK. For those unfamiliar with the brand, Oliver Bonas (or OB to those in the know) was founded by avid traveller Oliver Tress in 1993, who would bring back intriguing pieces from his travels. Today the store commissions clothing from all over the world and offers modern, luxe clothing in quality materials. The new store will feature the full OB range of womenswear, jewellery, homeware and gifts. Slotting into the former American Apparel lot, the store will likely be popular with the regular commuters – a bonus for Bonas.
ALESHA DIXON FOR LITTLE BLACK DRESS
(06/10) Alesha Dixon - winner of Strictly, Britain’s Got Talent judge and Queen of noughties garage music (notably coiner of phrase ‘so-so-so-scandulous’) - is the new brand ambassador and collaborative designer for Manchester-based fashion company, Little Black Dress. Ever the walking advertisement, Dixon wore the brand’s gorgeous rose print tulip dress (£89) to the reveal of new Autumn/Winter collection at Manchester House. Designed by Dixon herself (a rarity with celeb fashion collabs), the collection of cocktail and party dresses comes in autumnal florals, signature lace, metallic and velvet – this season’s top trend. You can shop the dresses online (£50 - £200), including the Grecian maxi dress Alesha wore on the current season of X Factor.
CHESHIRE V CHELSEA
(07/10) In TV-land the two would never cross paths, yet Made In Chelsea’s Louise Thompson and The Real Housewives of Cheshire’s Seema Malhotra got together for a morning workout class at Hale Country Club, for the launch of Myprotein’s new Active Women Range; a new collection of health and nutrition supplements formulated to ‘work in harmony with the female physiology’. Thompson is My Protein’s brand ambassador, and has recently undergone a body transformation. She looks rather trim – so what’s her secret? “I tend to stick to mostly weight training exercises instead of cardio and I’m lucky that I develop muscle quite quickly. I do like to mix it up with boxing and pilates but the weights really help with the muscle definition. I’m going to the Maldives in December so I’ll take it easy through October but ramp up the training in November.” For the launch event, guests worked up a sweat in the studio with master trainer Jonathan Chianca before enjoying a delicious raw breakfast from local chef Savannah Boyd-Donnelly.
ADORE JEWELLERY LINE LAUNCHES AT HOUSE OF FRASER
(07/10) Here’s a new jewellery line to adorn yourself with. New contemporary, fashion jewellery brand ADORE has launched at Manchester’s House Of Fraser; featuring delicate earrings, necklaces, rings and bangles each encrusted with glittering Swarovski crystals. Prices are reasonable, too, starting from around £39 – £100. Sounds like one for the impending Christmas list.
