AS with clothing, beauty has its own seasonal trends.
No sooner than we’re wearing boot cut jeans and copious amounts of face powder, are we trading them in for skinnies and trying to attain that JLo glow. It’s all fun where fashion’s concerned. Fun that is, up until the point where you realise some fads have irreversible consequences.
"You may have damaged the follicles by plucking over and over again for years, to the point where some areas won’t grow back at all. But quite often there is hope."
Eyebrows are the bane of many a woman’s face because unfortunately, thick brows haven’t always been the in thing.
Lots of plucking to get that pencil thin look as rocked by Pamela Anderson on Baywatch was fine in 1992, but 20 years later our brows aren’t quite so forgiving.
You see, there are only so many times you can aggressively de-root a hair before it gets the hint. Problem is, you’ve now changed your mind. Ahhh.
Pamela Anderson BrowsBig brows are back - see model Cara Delevingne for inspiration - but what about those of us whose brows have already had their 900 lives?
HD brows, that’s what.
The fact is, as Leah Hackett, one half of the Eyebrow Angels at Trevor Sorbie, said: “You may have damaged the follicles by plucking over and over again for years, to the point where some areas won’t grow back at all. But quite often there is hope. Sometimes the hairs do grow back very slowly, in the wrong direction or very fine.
Cara Delevinge Brows“The important thing is some do grow back, and with the HD Brows system, we can work with even the finest of hairs and fill in the areas that won’t grow so they’re barely detectable.”
Leah, who you may recognise as Tina McQueen from Hollyoaks a while back, and her business partner and fellow former Hollyoaks actress Sinead Moynihan, decided to set up Eyebrow Angels after learning the tricks of the trade from HD Brows pro and self-confessed ‘Eyebrow Queen’ Nilam Patel. Having been on screen for years both ladies know the importance of neat brows to frame the face, and for them, HD was the only way.
HD Brows is a seven step process which begins with a chat and an assessment of your face shape. I sat down with Sinead, and chewed her ear off about how years of abuse have left me with tadpoles for eyebrows. Hindsight is a wonderful thing.
She listened and looked and listened some more. From previous visits to beauticians I can’t say I’ve ever had much of a chat about my brows before a treatment and that’s perhaps been part of the problem.
HD Brows Steps 1 & 2: Consultation & Tint
It’s all well and good getting your eyebrows neatened up, but if the therapist hasn’t even looked at your face, the way you make facial expressions, listened to your concerns and what you hope to achieve, chances are you won’t be completely happy with the result.
Sinead explained how the aim of HD brows is to create naturally full brows rather than take hairs away, to create a clean shape. Tinting the brows is an important stage in the process because no matter your hair colour, there will be hairs that are hard to detect due to being thinner or lighter. The tint emphasises these fine hairs giving an immediately fuller look.
Once the tint is done, it’s time for shaping. Sinead actually used a HD eyebrow pencil to draw herself a guide of the shape she wanted to create before waxing around this shape. Funnily enough it’s actually part of your forehead that is included in a lot of the waxing and that’s the secret to a really clean-looking, smooth finish.
Threading then helps create a perfect line closer to the brow itself, with the final stubborn hairs fine tuned with a pair of tweezers. Lastly scissors are used to trim any long hairs and the HD pencil then fills in any gaps. The pencil is probably one of the best eyebrow pencils on the market. It has a very thin head which means you can actually draw strokes the width of a hair for a very realistic look. Some clients also need a small amount of eyebrow powder to fill in any gaps. HD Brow Beater, a clear liquid, is then applied with a mascara wand to set your gorgeous new brows into place.
I couldn’t be happier with the result. There’s always a fear when going to get your eyebrows done, that you’re going to end up with less hairs than you came with or, God forbid, a so-called ‘Scouse brow’ that looks painted on.
HD Brows will leave you with natural looking brows that will in turn transform your face and make that painstakingly long regrowth journey, a lot easier. Take that Pammie!
