THIS summer holiday, over 1000 children will have the opportunity to undertake intensive swimming lessons at their local pool in Manchester, completely free.
"With the recent revelation that 1 in 3 children leave primary school unable to swim, the summer holidays provide a fantastic opportunity to provide intensive swimming lessons to non and weak swimmers."
The Manchester Sport & Leisure Trust, which is responsible for the operation of nine pools across the city, has joined forces with the Wythenshawe Forum Trust to secure the funding from Kellogg’s to ensure these courses are provided to children who may be weak or non-swimmers.
Over three years, Kellogg’s Swim Active, working in partnership with the Swimming Trust and the ASA, will enable more than 120,000 non-swimmers nationwide to get active in the pool by encouraging children and their families to swim regularly.
Clare Goatman, Community Engagement & Partnership Manager at the Manchester Sport & Leisure Trust said: "With the recent revelation that 1 in 3 children leave primary school unable to swim, the summer holidays provide a fantastic opportunity to provide intensive swimming lessons to non and weak swimmers, giving them the perfect chance to develop their water confidence and swimming skills in a safe, fun environment.
"Free intensive swimming lessons have never been offered in either Trusts’ pools on a scale to match what will be available through this summer’s programme."
