Neil Brand and The Dodge Brothers bring back the art of playing music to silent films in a one-off event this weekend
Live music and cinematic landscapes come together this weekend when The Dodge Brothers - Mike Hammond, Mark Kermode, Aly Hirji and Alex Hammond - join forces with premiere silent film pianist Neil Brand to play a Saturday show at the stunning new Stoller Hall.
Renowned film critic Kermode - who plays bass and harmonica - will be joining his bandmates and acclaimed composer Brand for a musical accompaniment to Beggars of Life: the seminal 1928 American movie featuring Wallace Beery as a rail-riding hobo and Louise Brooks as a girl on the run.
The performance has been met with glowing reviews following London shows, and the band became the first ever to accompany a silent film at Glastonbury Festival in 2014.
Their Manchester performance at Chethams’ impressive new concert hall follows gigs at The British Silent Cinema Festival, The Barbican and The BFI Southbank.
Taking place on Saturday 13 May at 7pm, Silent Beggars will be followed at 9pm by some of The Dodge Brothers’ signature sounds.
