THE lights are off, the doors bolted, the phone ringing off the hook.

...the news comes as no great surprise

Avalanche has collapsed… but then with a name like that it was only ever going to go one way.

A note outside the Italian restaurant reads the venue has ‘closed for essential renovations and maintenance’, though the hastily fixed message hides something more grave underneath; a notice from the bailiff.

According to the notice, Strike Bailiffs – acting on behalf of the building owners Eldridge Pope & Co - entered and secured the property on Monday 8 August.

A quick search on Companies House sites reveals that the business – managed by property developer Rashid Jamil – has seen six directors depart in as many years, including Narhisa Rashid who resigned only last month.

It's a significant downward slide for the company, which in May 2014 reported a remarkable £2m turnover in its first year, with multi-million pound expansion plans on the horizon.

Still, the news comes as no great surprise. Despite the grand statements, the restaurant's inconsistency, inexperience and frankly sub-par offering was always going to struggle long-term in the shadow of the bigger Italian boys (Piccolino, Rosso, Jamie's) nearby.

Yet more evidence then - following the closures of Quill, Grinch and Bourbon & Black - that as competition intensifies across the city, Manchester is increasingly unwilling to accept mediocre.

Confidential has attempted to contact the restaurant for comment.
