BRUNTWOOD have announced a £60 million extension of their Citylabs science park on the University Hospital campus on Oxford Road.

Citylabs 3.0 will include integration with the listed Old Saint Mary’s Hospital and the restoration of a disused chapel

The Manchester Science Partnerships (MSP) development will see the construction of the £25 million Citylabs 2.0 and the £35 million Citylabs 3.0, providing additional space to enable biomedical companies – in collaboration with the NHS and academics - to grow and co-create new health products.

It is estimated that the extension will pump an additional £100m into the local economy and create over 750 new jobs.

Rowena Burns, Chief Executive of Manchester Science Partnerships, said the investment would ‘help create fresh ideas, partnerships and scientific discovery’.

Citylabs 1.0 (main image) – which was opened by former Chancellor George Osborne in September 2014 after a £25m redevelopment – is currently on track to generate an estimated £60 million a year to Manchester’s economy.

Citylabs 2.0 and 3.0 will be located on the corner of Oxford Road and Hathersage Road, opposite Whitworth Park, at the southern gateway to Europe’s largest clinical-academic campus.

Citylabs 2.0 will comprise 85,000 sq ft of lab and office space, whilst Citylabs 3.0 will include integration with the listed Old Saint Mary’s Hospital (pictured above) and the restoration of a disused chapel.

Council leader Sir Richard Leese said: “This major investment sends out a resounding message that we remain an outward and forward-looking city in which those who want to invest and create jobs can flourish."
