IF you work in the Albert Square area you might have noticed something different about The Splendid Sausage Company in the last few days. It’s got a new look and new name – it’s now known as Splendid Kitchen.

“While our real sausage hot dogs are still the largest part of the menu, we now offer a hell of a lot more.”

A brand new menu, launching on 2 January, will still have everything customers enjoyed in 2014, (the trademark hotdogs, burgers and fries and a new macaroni and cheese menu will be available all day every day). But from the New Year, the menu will be expanding with starters and big plates available from 5pm every weekday and all day at weekends.

The big plates will be priced from £10 to £12.50 and include fried chicken, braised ox cheeks, bangers and mash and what could fast become a favourite, honey roast ham on the bone served with fried eggs and seasoned fries.

From 12-5pm, Monday to Friday, there will be a whole new lunch menu of grilled cheese sandwiches, po’ boys and jacket potatoes all with the trademark Splendid slant. They’re all priced at no more than £5.

Owner Mike Edge explained, “We have been waiting for the right moment to launch our big plates for the past few months. Many of them are recipes we have grown up with and have cooked for years and we just feel they’re too good not to share.

“We’ve also been serving non-sausage dishes at lunch for a few months now to a great reception and wanted to expand this into the evening. The big plates allow us to do this.

“The new lunch menu is us reacting to the needs and wants of our customers and the great local demand for quality, hearty, home-cooked dishes for a similar price as what you’d pay for a sandwich from a chain. These new menu developments have seen a natural progression and the renaming from The Splendid Sausage Company to Splendid Kitchen.

“While our real sausage hot dogs are still the largest part of the menu, we now offer a hell of a lot more.”

Splendid Kitchen is on John Dalton Street, just off Albert Square. It’s open Monday to Saturday from midday -10pm, and on Sunday from midday-9pm.
