OVER 100,000 runners and spectators took part in this year's Great Manchester Run, including WBA world lightweight champion Anthony Crolla, Joy Division/New Order bassist Peter Hook and some of the world's finest long-distance runners, not to mention Spongebob Squarepants, a few Spidermans and a runaway bride.

This year's event saw three-time Olympic champion Kenenisa Bekele blast the elite men's race finishing in 28 minutes and eight seconds, while fellow Ethiopian Tirunesh Dibaba beat Kenyan Edna Kiplagat in the elite women's race, finishing with a time of 31 minutes and sixteen seconds.

In the wheelchair races, British athlete Simon Lawson took first place, finishing nearly three minutes ahead of second-placed Brett Crossley, while Paralympian Shelly Woods won the women's race.

The annual 10km race, the largest such event in Europe, began as a legacy event following the Manchester 2002 Commonwealth Games and has gone on to raise upwards of £22m for charity.
