AROUND 40,000 runners pounded Manchester streets on Sunday for the Great Manchester Run 2015.

The annual 10km race, the largest such event in Europe, began as a legacy event following the Manchester 2002 Commonwealth Games and has gone on to raise over £22m for charity.

Participants were joined by the likes of European 10,000m gold medalist Jo Pavey, musician Peter Hook, BBC News presenter Bill Turnbull, Batman, a big giraffe, a fat Tango bloke and legendary Kenyan long-distance runner Haile Gebrselassie - who announced his retirement following the race ending an incredible 25-year career.

Kenyan runners took the double with Stephen Sambu winning the men's race in 27:30, while Betsy Saina won the women's race in 31:49 with Great Britain's Gemma Steel a close second. British Olympic champion David Weir won the men's wheelchair race, while Shelley Woods won in the women's.
