Harley Young explores the variety of dishes available on the fine dining spot’s A La Carte menu
Led by award-winning Chef, Steven Smith, Bridge Street’s fire-based fine dining destination, KAJI, showcases the very best of Japanese cuisine in cutting edge ways.
With three AA rosettes under its belt, it’s a restaurant that has quality at the forefront of all it stands for, from impeccable attention to detail and sleek, stylish interiors to superb produce that has been lovingly crafted into innovative dishes by the highly skilled team.
Despite showstopping service, incredible tasting menus and some of the world’s finest wines and spirits readily available to order, the cost to dine at KAJI doesn’t have to be eyewatering.
In fact, their seasonal A La Carte menu gives you a good idea of the restaurant’s caliber without breaking the bank should you wish to come back and give the Chef’s Counter or The Omakaze Experience a try at a later date (which we highly recommend).
Here are some of our favourite dishes on the menu this season.
Sushi
If you’re looking to kick your evening off with a bit of theatre, the Chef’s Sashimi Selection is a surefire way to start.
Available as six (£21) or twelve pieces (£42), a platter of the chef’s current favourite sashimi - such as expertly prepared, incredibly fresh salmon or sea bream - is presented on a glass plate that lets the sushi do the talking, along with a touch of dry ice for some extra pizazz. It’s the one to order if you’re looking to make your mates on Instagram envious.
Snacks
Imagine an oyster in your mind, then throw that image out the window. The KAJI fried Louët-Feisser oysters (£8), served with oyster mayo, smokey house bonito hot sauce and fresh lime, is an absolute gamechanger. This innovative dish turns the salty, slippery sea dwellers into a high end, sexy version of a nugget. Give it a try, you won’t regret it.
At most restaurants, bread is seen as just a filler on the side. But KAJI’s Japanese milk bread (£6) served with crispy chilli and pickled jalapeno butter is so much more than that. It’s sweet, sticky, a little bit fiery when paired with the butter, and oh so moreish. It tears into six pieces, so one portion between two is ideal.
Another dish that needs no introduction is the bluefin tuna tartare (£14), dressed with crispy nori, yuzu wasabi, sesame, topped with a golden egg yolk and served with handmade crisps for scooping and dipping. Beautifully presented, fresh and full of umami flavour, it’s a rather generously portioned dish that’s bound to have you talking about it long after your visit.
Coal-fired mains and sides
The snacks are special on their own, but when followed up by one of KAJI’s coal-fired mains, such as the day boat catch of the day (we enjoyed the whole deboned sea bass with citrus soy glaze) and a portion of the Vietnamese salad with pickled daikon and roasted peanut on the side, you’re in for a real treat. Simply grilled over Japanese coals and English oak, served under a bed of edible flowers, there’s no better way to enjoy British seafood.
Desserts
As with all good things, a dining experience at KAJI must come to an end. So why not finish with a bang with their refreshingly fruity and decadent mango and matcha dessert (£11.50).
Breathtakingly beautiful, like something you’d find hanging in the Louvre, this dish is certain to round off your meal and make it a knockout.
