SINCE opening in 2009, Velvet Hotel has stormed its way to the top of the hotel ratings for Manchester. It is numero uno on TripAdvisor, and gets a very healthy 9.3 rating from the reviews on Booking.com. Not bad at all considering the high standard of city centre hotels it is up against.

If you win this competition, you can see what all the fuss is about – the prize is a mid-week  one-night stay for two, with breakfast.

You'll stay in one of the sumptuous, individually-designed bedrooms which look like a funky crossover between a New York loft apartment and a suite in a French château. Think chandeliers over huge, decadent beds backed by exposed brickwork, with thick plum curtains, and all the little luxuries that make hotel breaks such fun.

Each room has a large TV with a DVD player and CD player, luxury bathrobes and slippers, REN toiletries, a mini-bar, an iPod docking station, fresh fruit, and a bespoke tea and coffee tray with a biscuit barrel and fresh milk (which shouldn't be a big deal, but is).

Downstairs there's the bar and restaurant – one of Canal Street's class acts, in our opinion. The food here is first-rate, the eclectic décor is delightful, and the service is smiley. There's no sexual-orientation snobbery in here – everyone's welcome as long as they're nice.

Breakfast is served in the restaurant until 11am giving you lots of time for a leisurely start in the morning. Expect an extensive Continental buffet followed by a delicious Full English.

You don't have to be a hotel guest to enjoy this, by the way. Breakfast is available to non-guests for £9.50 for the Continental Breakfast, or £13.50 for the Continental plus the Full English. You can also dine from the a la carte menu from £2.95.
