THE similarities between afternoon tea and children's party food have long been apparent to us. Now it seems that City Café Manchester (at the exhaustingly titled DoubleTree by Hilton – Manchester Piccadilly) have caught on to this as well.

They've just launched a special afternoon tea for kids, alongside a new, limited-edition All Things Strawberry afternoon tea for adults. Together, they make for a rather different food treat for families (and a welcome alternative to clown-sponsored hamburger joints).

The children's afternoon tea includes classic sandwiches, cookies, jelly and ice cream, and a gingerbread man for kids to decorate with chocolate piping and hundreds and thousands. They get a milkshake to wash it all down, and colouring books and puzzles to keep them busy while you tuck into the adult version.

The All Things Strawberry afternoon tea is a more sophisticated affair – you're served strawberry macaroons, trifle, and a strawberries and cream tart, alongside your classic sandwiches. It's accompanied by unlimited tea from a selection including English breakfast tea, green tea, fruit teas and more.

Both these afternoon teas are available in the hotel's relaxed Piccadilly Lounge, or in the slightly more formal City Café restaurant. The children's afternoon tea costs £9.95 while the strawberry afternoon tea is £15 (£30 for two people). To book please call 0161 242 1020 and quote ‘family afternoon tea’.
