Sugo, Jane Eyre and Hip Hop Chip Shop add to neighbourhood's growing food and booze scene

The transformation of the former gritty industrial suburb into the UK's 'hippest neighbourhood' (it's official) surges ahead with news of not one, not even two, but, you guessed it, three new food and booze openings for fast-developing suburb.

As revealed in Confidential in May, Altrincham's widely popular pasta kitchen, Sugo, plans to open in the under-construction Sawmill Courts, while award-winning street food stalwarts the Hip Hop Chip Shop have also just announced plans to open their first permanent restaurant in the building.

Elsewhere, bartending brothers Jonny and Joe Eyre will launch new neighbourhood bar, Jane Eyre - named not after the famous novel by Charlotte Bronte but their mum - in One Cutting Room Square.

Manchester Life - the Ancoats development company owned by Manchester City Council and Man City owners, the Abu Dhabi United Group - say the three new venues should open in spring/summer 2018.

Here's the spiel...

JANE EYRE

The Jane Eyre Neighbourhood Bar will open in Spring ’18 within One Cutting Room Square, bringing a mix of continental snacks, high-quality cocktails, the finest offerings from Manchester’s local breweries, and one deck vinyl sessions for the community.

Brothers, Jonny and Joe Eyre said: “We took inspiration for the Jane Eyre from our late mum, and have been searching for the right neighbourhood and space to get the ball rolling. We’re going to be serving simple food and drinks made using high-quality ingredients. The cocktail menu will lead the way, and we will be serving a range of keg and bottled beers to showcase Manchester's finest breweries. Every Sunday will bring an extra special Bloody Mary menu."

SUGO

Sugo Pasta Kitchen will open in Summer ’18 within Sawmill Court and is Manchester’s first southern Italian pasta kitchen and builds on the amazing success of Sugo in Altrincham.

Alex De Martiis from Sugo, said: “We are ridiculously obsessive about bringing the excitement back into Italian cooking. We love the regeneration underway in Ancoats, and after thinking long and hard about the area, the history and the people we’ll be serving, the idea of a stripped back 60 seat southern Italian Pasta Kitchen filled us with joy!”

HIP HOP CHIP SHOP

The Hip Hop Chip Shop won the Best Mobile Fish and Chip Operator Award at the 2017 National Fish & Chip Awards and will be making Sawmill Court in Ancoats its first permanent restaurant in Summer ‘18.

Jonathan “Ozzie” Oswald, said: “We’re going to create a relaxed dining experience with proper comfort food, tasty drink selection, live music, great artwork and top-notch service. We’ve grafted so hard to build this business from scratch, but our own restaurant was the dangling carrot to keep us going. We just want to show the world what we are made of and can’t wait to get going in Ancoats!”

Marty Edelman, Executive Chairman of Manchester Life Development Company, said: “We care deeply about Ancoats and ensuring that we play our part in helping to build and grow the vibrant and thriving community. For that reason, we have worked hard to ensure our commercial tenants reflect and enhance the unique character of Ancoats and Manchester.

“The Jane Eyre, Sugo Pasta Kitchen and The Hip Hop Chip Shop are energetic Manchester-born businesses and they bring exactly the right offering and enthusiasm to the neighbourhood, and we can’t wait for them to open.  We will soon reveal the other exciting bars, restaurants, and retailers who will be joining them in our Ancoats and New Islington developments”
