Eat and drink South African at this new kitchen and bar on Oldham Street
FANCY trying out an unfamiliar cuisine this weekend? Or perhaps you already know all about South African food and want to see how this place measures up?
Either way, £100 to spend at new South African bar and kitchen Chakalaka is a prize you'll want to win. Quality, freshly-cooked food, authentic SA drinks, and a laid-back vibe are making it a popular destination already – and once they get their summer braai (barbecue) going, it'll be even busier.
On the menu is an intriguing mix of South African street food, classic dishes, and sweet treats. Go for the classic cured meat munchie, biltong – it's made fresh here in Manchester by a South African butcher. Or try their bobotie – imagine an exotic version of cottage pie with mango and apricots rather than carrots and onions
Desserts include the winsome malva sponge (hot apricot sponge soaked in a rich orange cream) and the heavenly koek balls (doughy balls fried and dipped in a ginger and cinnamon syrup).
For drinks, you could order a bottle of South African wine or try their range of beers – the IPA from Cape Brewery Co is the only South African craft beer on tap in Manchester. Their South African cocktails are spot-on too.
Chakalaka is on Oldham Street in the Northern Quarter. To enter the competition to win £100 to spend their on food and drinks, make sure you're logged in, then click the button below.
