THERE’S nothing quite like a hot tipple to warm you up, but there’s more to the oeuvre than mulled wine or a toddy with honey. And the bar team at Manchester235 are out to prove it, with an inventive new range of winter cocktails developed by master mixologist Matt Niedzwiedz, of Leicester Square’s Empire Casino.

The menu kicks off with a fruity slant on Espresso Martini; blending Smirnoff vanilla vodka with Chambord, muddled raspberries, a shot of espresso and a festive infusion of cinnamon. Cherry Collins continues the winter harvest theme - adding berries and cherries to the traditional gin and lemon, while replacing soda water with ginger beer for extra flavour. The result? Two complex concoctions that take popular classics and shake them up to delicious effect.
Apple Crumble, meanwhile, is tantamount to dessert in a glass. An indulgent blend of Jameson’s whiskey with lemon and cloudy apple juice, it comes rimmed with cinnamon and served with a slice of apple to offset the sweetness. Unsurprisingly, it’s scrumptious.
If you’re after something a little more light and refreshing, they have that covered too. Rosemary Pomegranate Mimosa is a sparking glass of Laurent Perrier champagne muddled with freshly-squeezed lime juice, pomegranate and rosemary - sprinkled with pomegranate seeds for a bit of crunch.
We’ve seen it crop up before but ginger comes into its own in Ginger Devil; a fiery medley of Julio Blanco tequila, Chambord, lime and ginger beer. Beware it’s strong, but boy is it good. Plus, it’s well known that ginger is one of the healthiest spices on the planet; great for more or less every less every winter complaint you can think of. So you could even call this a healthy cocktail (kind of).
Last but certainly not least is Hot Buttered Rum - and that isn’t poetic license, it does indeed contain butter. Unusual, yes, but it works a treat. Smooth and silky, it slithers down the throat: a warm blend of Ron Zacapa 23 rum, Disaronno, honey and lemon, undercut by a dash of bitters. It’s served hot, too, perfect for wrapping your hands round as you come in from the cold.
