CASTLEFIELD is having a spring clean and green-fingered volunteers are invited to help spruce it up.

St John’s Gardens is one of four spots across the city that will have new flowers, shrubs and trees planted in a public gardening day on Saturday 24 March. The other sites are: around the pagoda in Chinatown, Piccadilly Basin and the new pocket park on Thomas Street.

This is going to be a fantastic day for celebrating what’s been achieved so far through the Manchester Garden City scheme

After a day of gardening, volunteers will be treated to drinks in the Northern Quarter and a special talk by Radio 4 Gardner’s Question Time panelist Paul Peacock. He will discuss sustainable eating, offer tips to budding gardeners and give planting demonstrations.

Mr Peacock said: “I’m looking forward to meeting these enthusiastic city gardeners and hope I can offer some useful hints and tips on getting the most out of their green spaces. Growing your food not only saves money but is good for the environment and lots of fun.”

The day is being organised by CityCo and Manchester-based architects BDP who work together on the Manchester Garden City initiative, which was responsible for giving the spots a make-over in recent years.

BDP director Gavin Elliott said: “This is going to be a fantastic day for celebrating what’s been achieved so far through the Manchester Garden City scheme.

“These newly created green spaces have really improved little corners of the city centre and been enjoyed by residents, workers and visitors alike.”

Work will start at 1pm on 24 March at St John’s Gardens. For more information and to get involved, email Carol Stansfield at email@carolstandfield.co.uk by noon on Friday 23 March.
