Beefy burgers and buttermalk fried chkn – a new concept in dirty food

RECENTLY landed in the Northern Quarter is Manchester city centre’s first and only 100% vegan diner, V-Rev. Revolutionary in its “all plants no pain” concept, it’s delivering meat-free dude food in the guise of beefy burgers, fried chkn, sammiches and mac’n’cheez.

We popped in to check it out – and we were impressed. The colourful décor is properly cool, and really channelling the typical Northern Quarter ‘look’ with black-and-white tiled floor and red leatherette (obviously not the real animal deal!). You won’t find exposed brick and shabby-chic music posters here, but instead a bright, clean and modern space, which is refreshingly different.

Talking of which… The guys at V-Rev Vegan Diner make their beefy patties in-house out of “wheat meat” seitan and soy, and you can pick from single, double or double double burgers. Their finger-lickin’ spicy fried chkn is also made from seitan and triple-dipped in buttermalk before cooking. All burgers come with a side of fries, with the chance to upgrade to loaded for an extra couple of quid.

We’ll be back for the Viet option (£3.25) with hoisin sauce, hot Sriracha mayo, crushed peanuts and coriander – they were a real highlight. We teamed them with a Whopper Flocka Flame (£8.95) dirty burger topped with cheez and baecon, and a Buffalo Chkn Salad (£7.95) – a five-a-day treat with loads of lush lettuce, tomato, rocket, avocado, celery and red onion.

On the side, we had Mac & Cheez Sticks (£3.25) – breaded and deep-fried, they weren’t quite so healthy, but tasty just the same.

There’s plenty to choose drinks-wise – ethical kolas, cocktails, craft beers, wines and some pretty damn good ice creem milkshakes. There’s also a brand-new dessert menu – we went for the Hell-vis (as in the King) pancakes, laden with “Snickers sauce”: maple syrup, banana, fake bacon (fake-on? Anyone?), crushed salted peanuts, marshmallow and dark chocolate truffle…

The V-Revolution may not be televised – but it has been photographed. See our gallery here.
