VENTURED into the January sales yet? There’s no greater thrill than hitting the shops, chasing beautiful bargains and returning home laden with shiny, brightly coloured carrier bags right? Before you go flashing that credit card around, here’s a few tips on how to avoid getting carried away and buying things you don't really need.

Tip 1

Before you even step a foot over the door, think about what you really need. Have a look in your wardrobe and see if there any gaps. If you need a skirt, for example, what type of skirt? Is it for work or leisure? What colour would work best with the tops you already have? January sales are the perfect time to nab that amazing coat you have had your beady eye on all winter, but make sure it’s a classic. This beautiful statement check coat from Karen Millen is reduced from £350 to £245. Created from an amazing, luxurious Italian fabric, this key coat has a monochrome, graphic check print, edged in soft faux leather. A timeless classic you will wear year on year.

Tip 2

Do a little research online to see what the going rates are for what you want. Doing a little price comparison could not only save you a fortune, but cut down on the amount of trudging from shop to shop you do.

Sales shopping: do your research

Tip 3

Dress comfortably and shop early or late in the day to avoid the crowds as much as possible. The correct shoes are very important. Wear flats or low wedges. Choose a style that is easy to take on and off - anything with lots of buckles will just get in the way. If you’re going to a shopping centre, ditch the big coat - you will only end up carrying it around all day. Wear flat fronted trousers or classic jeans and a simple top. A light weight mac will finish your look. Take a bottle of water with you and a healthy snack to nibble on.

Tip 4

Have a budget and stick to it. Seriously. Plan your route with military precision and don't be tempted to divert.

Tip 5

Don't go for high fashion items you will wear once and give to a charity shop. Look out for good quality neutral basics - classics that will never date. Think cashmere cardigans, tuxedo jackets, little black dresses or a classic white shirt. Think about your body shape and personal colouring - will the item flatter you? Make sure whatever you buy will go with at least three other things in your wardrobe. Don't buy something a size too small hoping that you will slim into it - buy the size you are now.

A quality handbag like this one from Reiss is a good choice (was £275 now £137). It is a classic style that's practical - I love the grey green colour - a nice alternative to black. It’s also a great size in a simple design that will not date.
