AROUND 350,000 people came into Manchester city centre to watch the Olympic Games in Exchange Square according to Manchester City Council.
Nearly 30,000 people alone visited the site on ‘Super Saturday’ to watch new sporting heroes ‘Mo’, ‘Jess’ and ‘Greg’ complete British athletics’ finest hour.
The area became Manchester’s official Olympics public gathering spot of choice with the weather just about holding for Mancunians and visitors alike to revel in the record breaking success of Britains athletes. Many people also took the chance to celebrate their athletic drinking abilities at the Hope and Glory pop up bar.
Nearly 30,000 people visited the site on August 4, to watch new sporting heroes ‘Mo’, ‘Jess’ and ‘Greg’ complete British athletics’ finest hour.
Sizeable crowds were also present to cheer on locally based Olympians like the cycling team who train at Manchester Velodrome and Manchester based Jade Jones who became the first British woman to win a medal in taekwondo.
Manchester City Council's Executive Member for Culture and Leisure, Councillor Rosa Battle, said: "The 2012 Olympics will be remembered as a phenomenal success for Team GB and Mancunians have been among the first to get behind our athletes, many of whom were trained just a few miles away from the city centre.
"Our Olympic Live Site has been the perfect place for people to get together and celebrate success after success, while also providing a real boost for the city centre economy."
Manchester visitors can still watch other events on the Big Screen in Exchange Square, including Paralympic action and The Last Night Of The Proms in September.
