ONCE relegated to creating masterpieces in the dark recesses of secrecy, something of a recent breakthrough in attitudes to street artists means these creative non-conformists can finally enjoy their moment in the spotlight.

Art Battle Manchester V will take place at the Grade II-listed Engine Room at Hope Mill

Despite certain legends like Banksy preferring to remain anonymous in a nod to the genre’s mysterious origins, others are clamouring to seek the recognition they deserve on this contemporary new canvas.

Having been introduced to the city two years ago, Art Battle Manchester shows no signs of slowing, with the offbeat social gathering returning for its fifth and biggest installment on Saturday 26 September.

Whilst in previous years, artists were somewhat restricted within the indoor confines of music venue Soup Kitchen and Contact Theatre (no spray cans lest noxious fumes level a reveller), Art Battle organisers have now secured an outdoor venue so the ten participants - ranging from tattoo artists to doodlers and graffitists - can let go without limitations.

Artists don't do limitation well, after all.

Art Battle Manchester V will take place at the Grade II-listed Engine Room at Hope Mill - Thomas Hope's former publishing works that over 100 artists now call home.

The battle will see artists of all persuasions compete one another to create an original artwork in only 30 minutes. The audience - circling the participants throughout - will have the final say on the winning piece with all works auctioned off and proceeds split between the artists and nominated charity Forever Manchester.

Spectators can also hit the bar and listen to DJs while watching a knackered old banger get 'sprayed up'. Street.

Tickets cost £10 and are available on Skiddle from 9am on Friday 7 August. To find out more visit at Facebook, Twitter and Instagram
